Spontaneous Commentary is a brief Bible Commentary by Rob Robinson on a section of Scripture that is written without notes or other commentaries. Rob simply comments on the verse of scripture as the Holy Spirit speaks to him on each particular verse.
Romans 8:28-39 “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
The first thing to notice about verse 28 are the words “We know”. In order to understand that everything you might go through in your life is for a good purpose, a person must first “know” that they are loved by God and that He is aware of everything they are going through at any particular moment of their life.
Whether they be bad things or good, for the person who is trusting in Jesus, they can rest assured that God is working all things out for a good purpose in the end.
Many times we might fear that because we have made mistakes in our life that we have short circuited the Lord from being able to bless us. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you have given your life to Jesus Christ, you can be assured that even your mistakes, God will turn them around and make good come from them, if of course you continue to walk after the spirit and trust Him.
Romans 8:29-30 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.
Remember that before you were ever born, the Lord already knew everything about you. It is not as if He had to wait to see what kind of person you are, then He loved you. Long before you were ever born, the Lord was already aware of all of your mistakes. Despite knowing you failures, the Lord still decided that He would come to the Earth and give His life for you on the Cross. His love for you is not based on how lovable you are at any given moment. He loves you because that is what God is, pure, perfect Love. He always sees you not for who you are, but for the person that He is going to make you to be.
Because you exercised your right to choose and believed upon Jesus as your Savior, the Father elected you, and predestined you to become just like Jesus in the future. If you are disappointed in yourself often, be encouraged that someday when Jesus returns for us, that all of us will instantly be transformed into a brand new person who mirrors the behavior and attitudes that Jesus displayed while here on the Earth. The total process of being fully sanctified for Jesus will not be complete until the Rapture happens and you receive your new glorified body. Until that day, we will always struggle with sin and make many mistakes. The promise of 1 John chapter one is that if we will continually confess our daily sins to the Lord, He will continually cleanse us of all unrighteousness and our fellowship with Him will be uninterrupted.
Remember that you are made right, or “justified” in the sight of God, not because of anything you have done or will do. You are made right only because of what Jesus has done for you at the Cross, and the simple act of you believing this truth.
Romans 8:31-32 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?
The fact that God genuinely loves you is displayed to you ever day in real and practical ways. His promise to you is that if you will keep Jesus first in your life, then He will take care of all of your other needs. When you forget that God loves you, or go through those times of doubts that He does love you, go back to what you do know…
At the Cross, Jesus forever proved to you that He loves you. When you were at the worst possible moment of your life, that is when Jesus was loving you the most. If Jesus could love you so much when you were just a sinner with no hope of saving yourself, how much more will he now that you have given your self to Him, also give to you all the good things you need for your life. When you don’t feel His love or cannot see any evidence of it in your life, go back and remember the Cross where Jesus died for you. There He forever displayed to you how deep and how far reaching His love is.
Romans 8:33-34 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
One of the problems in the current world is that other people who claim to know Jesus can sometimes be the hardest on you when you are struggling. When you are down, or are making mistakes in your life, other believers will often do what the friends of Job did to him. They become “miserable comforters” by seeking to tell us what they view our problem is. If we would just listen to them and do what they are telling us, then everything would get better. The problem with our friends is that they do not really know what we are going through, nor what is happening to us in the realm of the spirit.
Remember that Job’s friends told him that if he would just confess whatever sin it was that he was holding on to, that God would again bless his life. They did not know that in the spirit realm, satan had made an accusation that Job was only serving the Lord for the benefits he received from Him. Job had done nothing wrong, in fact it was because he had done everything right, that satan was given very limited access to his life. Job lost all of his material blessing. His children and even his health were taken from Job. In all of his suffering, Job never blamed the Lord and said publically: “Naked I came into this world and naked I shall go. The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, still the name of the Lord is blessed.”
Remember that because Jesus had died for you and has risen from the dead, you will overcome every obstacle and trial of your life… Eventually. You are justified and made right because of what Jesus has done for you and no one can take that from you, period.
Romans 8:35-37 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
Since now you understand that you were predestined to win and that no matter what happens to you in the course of your life, the Lord will not only be with you but also help you to make it through these things, what can ever separate you from that kind of Love?
Then Paul lists a long line of problems like tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril or sword. and reminds us as we read this that none of these will be successful in separating you from God’s love. Jesus is going to hold on to you throughout you life and never let go of you. Just make sure that you do the same to Him, never let go.
Remember that in all of the trials and distress of your life, you are going to someday conquer everything and reign with the Lord in His glorious kingdom. Though you may feel beaten, you will never be conquered. In fact, you will be the conqueror, because Jesus has loved you so very much.
Romans 8:38-39 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Finally as Paul finishes these thoughts in chapter eight, he reminds us that we must be “persuaded” by these facts before the trials ever come along. If we have fully prepared our heart and mind that God does love us and has a good purpose and good end intended by every trial of our life, then we will be able to meet each challenge as they come into our life.
Not even the angels or any other created thing can ever rob you of what Jesus died to give you. Even the worst of trials cannot separate you from God’s love. When you give your entire life to Jesus Christ, you become His forever and the object of His affection. Remember that you now belong to Jesus and He takes very good care of those things that belong to Him.
May the Lord continue to bless you as you study and live His word.
