The Bible clearly teaches that God created the Universe “Ex Nihilo”, out of nothing. Before the Lord began speaking the universe into existence, nothing existed.
Psalms 33:6-9 By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, And all the host of them by the breath of His mouth… 9 For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.
When John began his eyewitness account of Jesus, he begins by telling us that “All things were made by Jesus…”
John 1:3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
The context of John chapter one is that when he says “all things” John is talking about the entire Universe. Later in the book of Colossians, Paul supports this claim by describing the specific parts of the Universe that Jesus created:
Colossians 1:16-17 For by (Jesus) all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.
Finally, in the book of Revelation John writes the reason why Jesus created all things in the Universe, it was God’s will that these things were made:
Revelation 4:11 “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”
When Paul was speaking to those who did not know God in Lystra, he told them that he was a messenger of “A Living God who made the heaven and the earth…”
How strange and difficult to comprehend how everything could come from nothing, and that all the things we can see now came from elements that were formerly invisible.
Romans 4:17 describes the fact that God call things that do not exist things that do not exist”. The implication here is that when God calls things into existence they are irresistibly compelled to come at His Word. The fact that God created the universe out of nothing means that nothing in the universe is eternal. All that we can presently see today came into existence when God spoke them into existence and there was a time when they did not exist.
This is why the Bible is specific to point out that God is supreme over all creation and nothing in creation is to be worshipped except God.
If we say that all of creation did not come from nothing, we would therefore have to conclude that matter existed beforehand and is also eternal like God. If you follow this thought to it’s end than what right would God have to rule over all creation and demand it’s glory if it also was eternal as He is.
For us as human beings, the fact that God did create the universe out of nothing means that everything He made has a meaning and a purpose. Your life is important, you are important because the Lord of Heaven and Earth made you for a reason. We should try to find out what that purpose is and live in a way that brings glory to the Lord in all we say and do.
Today, you have the opportunity to bring glory to the Lord by the way you speak, act and treat other people. When you do all these things in a way that imitates how Jesus spoke, acted and treated people God notices your actions and He is glorified by your life. This is the reason that you and I were created in the first place. To bring as much glory to God as possible by the way we live our lives and to know Him and enjoy fellowship with Him forever.
