Psalms 90:12 So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom.
When we are young, time seems to stretch out endlessly before us. The days are longer and the time that we think we have to accomplish our goals seems endless.
Suddenly the sun rises on our 50th birthday and we realize that our life is nearly used up. Plans that we have not fulfilled become apparent that they most likely will not be realized. Dreams are no longer of conquering the world but move into comfortable silence in just enjoying each day.
Jesus spoke of the importance of settling one very important issue: Eternal Life.
Matthew 16:26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
We may live on the earth for 70 or 80 years, but when we pass from this life into eternal life, the one decision that we made while alive, either for or against Jesus, will determine where we spend forever.
Psalms 90:10 The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.
In the movie 2012, the wife of the main character in the movie asks her husband “As we grow older we change, do you think you’ve changed?” To this her husband replies: “I eat a lot more cereal now…”
To realize the mistakes of the past and learn from them is a very good thing. To look into your soul and see that there is great void, is the beginning of wisdom. The Lord has seen to it that each one of us has a limited amount of time on this earth to learn what is most important. The substance of our life was never intended to be made up of things, but of people. We were made for God and to enjoy fellowship with Him and each other forever.
At the end of our lives, it is who we have known and who we have taken the time to love that will matter most. Even if we have never pursued God in all of our life, it is for certain that in the final days, everyone considers Him. He has placed a knowledge of Himself inside each one of us and a knowledge of the eternal. What we do with this inner knowledge and how much we chose to pursue the eternal and maker of eternity determines for us, everything that is of value in this universe.
To love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength is the greatest achievement of man. To find our purpose in Jesus and to Love Him for His Sacrifice and great power to save, is in the end all that matters.
As you walk with the Lord today, consider that your days are numbered and that eternity is fast approaching. Make it your goal to Love Jesus with the same fervency and purpose that He had for you when He gave up all to give you everything.
