Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse…”
There is more evidence for the existence of God today, than at any other time in history.
The atheist claims that the universe is “uncaused”. That there was no outside force that caused the universe to come into existence. That everything that exists just happened by chance. They also claim that the universe is “Eternal”, that it has always existed and always will exist.
Discoveries in the recent studies of Astronomy and Physics have completely destroyed these theories.
Charles Darwin published his study in evolution called the “Origin of the Species” in 1859. The original study of the evolution of lower life forms into higher life forms was not his idea. Anaximander, the Greek philosopher from the 6th century was the actual first publication regarding the possibility of evolutionary theory. Darwin was the one that proposed the actual way in which the evolutionary processes happened.
Darwin said that we are the product of billions of years of “fortuitous occurrences”, not intelligent design. He claimed that “Chance Chemistry along with extremely long periods of time is what caused all life on earth. The basis for evolutionary theory is that all life forms came from a single ancestor, approximately 3.5 billion years ago. Under that thought, man is just another animal, he is simply an accident.
Recent studies in Molecular Biology have greatly crippled the evolutionary theory. These studies have proven that the processes of the evolution of life are really impossible. No process of evolution where one species becomes another species has ever been observed or even found in any of the fossil record. Secondly, by the amazing advances of Molecular Biology in understanding the microscopic working of the cell, the finding have pointed to the fact that the creation of life requires an intelligence, or a mind to make life possible.
Psalms 19:1 says that “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.”
Carl Sagan said that “The Cosmos is all that is, or ever was, or ever will be…”
Today, we know that Sagan was wrong, the Universe is not all there is , ever was, or ever will be because even the universe itself had a beginning. So, the questions that remains then, how do we know that the universe is not eternal, that is not “uncaused”?
If the universe indeed did have a beginning, then was it created? Was there also a beginning for Time and Space? Did the universe create itself?
Beginning about 4 B.C., Plato and Aristotle began to say that “The universe is eternal and that there is infinite Time and Space.”
It is a fundamental law of motion that “All things that are in motion, were set into motion by something else”. Since the entire universe is moving away from a central point at incredible speed, it must have been set into this motion by some outside force.
It is also a basis of science that all effects, must have had a first cause.
What was the first cause for the universe? What action was the first action that set the universe into it’s present motion?
Recent discoveries in the 20th century, point to a beginning of the universe at some point in time. There exists today, evidence that the universe was created by an “Extra Dimensional, Transcendent Creator”.
In 1978, Robert Jastrow in his book, “God and the Astronomers, on page 11 said:
“I am fascinated by some strange developments going on in Astronomy partly because of their religious implications and partly because of the peculiar reactions of my colleagues. The essence of these strange developments is that the universe had, in some sense, a beginning. That it began at a certain moment in time.”
In 1989, again Jastrow said in his book “Journey to the Stars”:
“Most remarkable of all, Astronomers have found proof that the universe sprang into existence abruptly, in a sudden moment of creation, as the Bible said it did”.
In 1887, American Physicists Albert Michelson and Edward Morley said:
“The speed of light is constant in all circumstances. The speed of light does not vary even if the observer is rapidly moving away from or moving towards the light”.
An example of this would be seen in the following example:
The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second. Traveling at just 5 Miles per second in a space ship with it’s head lights on. As you watch the ship approach you it would not be measured at 186, 0005 miles per second, but just 186,000 miles per second.
In 1905, Albert Einstein in his publication: “Special Theory of Relativity”, said:
“The measurements of length, Mass, Velocity and Time are relative to the velocity of 2 or more observers”.
An example of this is would be:
“If we had twin brothers that determined that one would stay on earth, the other would fly aboard a space ship at 99% of the speed of light. The Twin aboard the space ship, at 100% of the speed of light, would not notice anything different as he is propelled through space. When he arrives back on earth however, he would find that his twin had been dead for hundreds of years, while he has aged only a few years.”
The brother traveling at such a high speed has slowed down his time.
This means that time, Space and Mass are all relative to the observer.
In 1913, Vesto Slipher, and Astronomer, published evidence that a dozen galaxies in our vicinity are racing away from us at enormous speeds of up to 2 million miles per hour. Prior to this discovery, scientist believed that the galaxies were fixed and simply rotating in place. (Proceedings of the American Astronomical Society 1914)
In 1915, Albert Einstein published his “Second Theory” called “The General Theory of Relativity”, extending it to include measurements of Time, Space, Matter and Length for Accelerated bodies.
The fact is that space is expanding, that all matter in the universe is moving away from an apparent point of origin.
Einstein did not recognize this fact in his publication at first. Willem De Sitter found that Einstein had made a mathematical error in some of his calculations. When it was corrected, it revealed that the universe is expanding away from a point of origin.
This discovery proved that the universe must have begun at a single point in Space, A definite moment in Time, in a sudden burst of Light, Heat and Energy. This sudden finite birth of the universe has been called “The Big Bang”.
Einstein discovered that Time itself is a physical property of the universe. Space and time are so closely tied together that one cannot exist without the other. Physicists call this “Space/Time”.
In 1968 and 1970, British Astrophysicists Steven Hawking, George Ellis and Roger Penrose published papers that expanded Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity to include measurements for time and space.
According to their calculations, time and space has a finite beginning that corresponded to the origin of matter and energy. What this means is that prior to the origin of matter and energy, space and time also did not exist!
The scientific community did not accept this evidence for a finite expanding universe at first, initially even Einstein reacted with anger that he had made a mathematical error. Finally, Einstein conceded that the evidence did point to a universe that had a beginning, and was moving away from an apparent point of origin.
What all this scientific information means is that the Universe is not eternal, it has a definite beginning, which also was the beginning of time. All time and space started at the same moment, the beginning of the Universe.
All the objects in the Universe are moveing away from a definite central point, the point of the first cause.
All of the current scientific data suggests then that just as the Bible has stated all along, “In the Beginning, God Created the Heavens and the Earth…”
As science continues to grow in their knowledge of the Universe, they grow closer to what the Holy Scriptures have been saying for centuries. It is for certain that there is not room in the scientific community for any honest man to conclude that the Universe had no beginning or that is just all happened by accident.
All of the scientific data today suggests that there is an intelligence behind the origin of the Universe and the it appears to be directed by an intelligence even to the present day.
Scientists today are very hesitant to endorse the beginning of the Universe by an intelligence because this would indicate the there is a God or intelligence which has created and directed all things that exist. If there is a God to whom all things were made by, then it follows that all of creation is subject to this Creator and accountable for the lives they live.
The real reason that many of today’s scientists will not admit the Universe was created, is exactly the same reason that John gave in his Gospel for why men will not believe that Jesus is that Creator:
John 1:10 “He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.”
John 1:1-5 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”
John 3:20 “For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.”
Men do not come into the light, the truth that Jesus Created the Universe, because they love their sin and they do not want to repent and be saved. It is not because there is not enough evidence. It is because there is not enough desire to believe Jesus is God, on the part of those who know the truth inside their heart, yet choose to not believe.
