The Human Spirit and Digital Information

Before a recent trip to Asia, I digitized several of my favorite DVD movies and placed them on my portable external hard drive for viewing at a later date. In the prior state as a DVD these movies took up a large amount of space that made them impossible to carry in my baggage. After the movies were changed into coded digital information and were placed on the external hard drive I could easily transport them in my baggage with no added weight whatsoever.

This is possible because digital information has zero weight. How is it that thousands and thousands of pages of digital code placed on a data storage device can have no mass?

When we speak of either a massive galaxy or a minute particle of dust, we do so in the same terms because they both have mass, charge, length and width. Yet when we speak of information and matter, these terms are no longer relevant because they have no mass or measure of weight.

The weight of the 500 GB hard drive that I placed hundreds of movies on, weighed exactly the same before and after these digitized movies were added.

In the human DNA genome, although it contains thousands and thousands of pages of digital information that directs the cells in their production of protein molecules, they add absolutely no weight to the DNA stand whatsoever. This leaves us with the perplexing question of exactly what is digital information and what is it comparable to?

I would like to suggest that the digital information in a strand of human DNA is very similar to the spirit inside the body of every living human being. On simpler terms: just as the software installed on a computer tells the machine how to operate and makes it in a sense alive, so also is the eternal spirit that lives inside a human being. This spirit is what enables life to be possible and what allows a human being the capacity to express what the spirit is, by use of the body.

If the onboard software or BIOS that tells the computer how to operate is not present inside the machinery of a computer, it has no capacity to function. Conversely, at the moment that the eternal spirit of a human being departs the body, the machinery of the human body ceases to function.

Is it possible that as the coded information of DNA is digital, so also is the spirit inside a human being that makes it able to function, also digital? The digital information of DNA is invisible to the human eye, even as the spirit in a person cannot be seen with human eyes.

I have been with a few people at the moment that they drew their final breath and their bodies ceased to function. Their bodies turned from pink or brown to an almost instantaneous ashen color and you could immediately feel that the person was no longer there.

As we learn more about this information that is coded in the DNA of the human cell, it will be interesting to see what other facts that are also uncovered that will shed new light on understanding the spirit that lives within the human body. I would imagine that as we discover additional irrefutable evidence that life has been designed and created by God, we will also find that the spirit inside our bodies will begin to be seen in ways that will amaze us.

Most people do not realize that all human beings are eternal beings. When their body dies, their spirit continues to live on forever and ever. What we are deciding while still in these bodies on earth, is where we want to spend eternity. God has given us the choice to love Him and spend out eternal existence with Him, or to reject His love and spend it apart from Him. The choice is ours, and He loves us so much that He will honor the decision that we make. He will seek to influence that decision, much as an earthly father seeks to influence the decisions of his sons or daughters, but the Lord will not force anyone to love Him.

Jesus came to die for us so that the justice of God could be satisfied in regards to the penalty that we all owe for our sin. When anyone believes what God has said about Jesus, that person is accounted as righteous by God and obtains the forgiveness of their sins and has a new eternal destination with God.

I hope that you know how much you are loved today and that your life has a very important purpose. God created you and I to know Him and love Him forever. It is by coming into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ that we find our true purpose for being born on this planet.

I pray that you know this great love in your own life and that you understand that death is not the end for someone who has come into a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, it is the beginning. On the day that your heart ceases to function and you draw your last breath, you will awake into the most beautiful and glorious place you could imagine. You will see your creator face to face and feel an overwhelming sense of love that will fill you and satisfy you such as nothing else you have ever known.

May the Lord bless all your efforts in finding Him and beginning this new life.
