Continuing with the study previous to this one, detailing the quiet spirit of a Godly woman, Peter then moves on to instruct the man who is married:
1 Peter 3:7 “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.”
If you are blessed to be married to a woman who has a quiet and gentle spirit and prays for you when you are not correct in your behavior, Peter reminds you that are not excused from having bad behavior.
To “dwell with you wife with understanding” means that you are aware that when you are harsh or abrasive with your wife or children, that you need to change that behavior and apologize quickly. It is completely inexcusable for any man who claims to call Jesus his Lord and Savior to be harsh with his wife or children.
Then Peter reminds the man of the house that he is “To give honor to the wife as the weaker vessel…”
To honor someone is to place them first in your life. To consider their feelings before your own. To place a person at the forefront of your mind and heart and to make them the object of your affection. To honor the Lord in our life is to do these things. No less important is that we give this same kind of honor to our wife, second only to the Lord.
