A Special Prophetic Study
The Book of Daniel
“The Coming Peace Plan”
by Rob Robinson
It has often puzzled those who study Bible Prophecy, just how it is that the antichrist could rise to preeminence as a leader in peace, uniting the entire world in such a short period of time.
Daniel’s chapter 9 describes the beginning of this world ruler who will later be termed “The beast” as follows:
Daniel 9:27 “Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week he shall bring and end of sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, even until the consummation, which is determined, is poured out on the desolate.”
From Daniel’s description of this new world leader, his rise to prominence will occur very quickly. The power that he will gain to enable him to unite the Israeli and Arab leaders to sign a peace treaty for “One Week”, an Old Testament catch phrase for seven years (Genesis 29:27), will come from the world’s ability to accept just such a man as a peacemaker in a very short period of time.
What events could propel a man onto the world scene so quickly and enable him to make peace with two nations so diversely opposed to each other, in a way that no other man has ever been able to accomplish?
When I opened my Amazon Kindle Saturday morning, to the news that President Barack Obama had won the coveted Nobel peace prize, I read with great interest.
The similarities between his rapid rise to fame and the world’s acceptance of him as a great “savior” and that World leader described in Daniel chapter 9 were incredible.
Listen to a quote from this Saturday’s Washington Post regarding President Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize:
“The reaction Friday to Obama’s winning the prize tended to cast him as either a savior or a fraud with little conversation in between…”
The Nobel Committee said that they selected President Obama with hope that he could “unite not only Democrats and Republicans, but the entire world.”
“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future”, the Nobel committee said.
In the Book of Revelation there is a description of the leader that will come upon the world scene at the beginning of the seven-year tribulation period whom the world will wonder after proclaiming “Who is like the beast…”
So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”
Now before you get the wrong idea here, I am not endorsing the fact that President Obama is the antichrist. There is no way at this point in history that anyone can say for certain who the antichrist is.
The Bible does however give us warning, instruction, and information about what this man will say, do and accomplish in a very short period of time.
He will unite the entire world under one government, one monetary system, one military, and one religion. All within a very short period of time.
When this World leader comes on the scene, he will have to capture the attention of the entire world very quickly and have in place, the necessary tools to accomplish what the Bible says that he will be able to do.
The final days of the earth in its present state, will be marked by what the Bible describes as a 7-year period of Tribulation, the last 3 ½ years described as “The Great Tribulation”.
21 (Jesus Speaking) For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.
22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
This time of Great Tribulation will be made manifest by the introduction of this charismatic man to the world, who will be able to unite all nations under his rulership.
The Book of Daniel describes how this seven years of Tribulation will begin:
Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.”
The beginning of the short career of this man who will be called “The Beast”, will be apparent by his ability to make peace between many nations for a period of seven years.
The prophecy in Daniel chapter 9 that speaks of this seven-year peace plan, concerns the Nation of Israel. At the time that Daniel is given this prophecy, the nation of Israel has been in captivity in Babylon. Nearly 70 years previously, Daniel and many of his fellow countrymen were dragged away from Israel as their city and temple were ransacked and destroyed.
As Daniel is reading from the Old Testament book of Jeremiah concerning the prophecy of Israel’s capture by Babylon, Daniel notices something incredible:
8 “Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Because you have not heard My words,
9 behold, I will send and take all the families of the north,’ says the LORD, ‘and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and will bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, and against these nations all around, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, a hissing, and perpetual desolations.
11 And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.’ “
3 “For behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD, “that I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,” says the LORD. “And I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.”
4 Now these are the words that the LORD spoke concerning Israel and Judah.
As Daniel is now in his 80’s, he has been in Babylon since he was a teen of 17 years. He realizes that the Lord had predicted through the prophet Jeremiah that after the 70 years of captivity were complete, God was going to allow His people to return to their own land again in Israel.
Daniel’s response to this amazing news, was to begin to pray for the entire nation of Jews who had forgotten the Lord. As Daniel was petitioning the Lord on behalf of his nation, confessing their sin and their disobedience, Gabriel came from heaven to Daniel and gave him the most important prophecies in the Bible.
2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the LORD through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
3 Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.
As Daniel is praying and repenting for his entire nation and people for their disobedience to the Lord that cause their captivity by Babylon, Gabriel the Angel come to Daniel with a message:
21 yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering.
22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand.”
It is then that Gabriel gives to Daniel the most astonishing and important Prophecy perhaps ever recorded:
24 “Seventy weeks are determined For your people and for your holy city, To finish the transgression, To make an end of sins, To make reconciliation for iniquity, To bring in everlasting righteousness, To seal up vision and prophecy, And to anoint the Most Holy.”
25 “Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; The street shall be built again, and the wall, Even in troublesome times.”
“Seventy Weeks are determined for YOUR people”
Notice that the object of the prophecy is towards “Daniel’s people”, the Jews, not the gentile nations, not the church. The primary intention and direction of this prophecy is with Israel and the people who were called by God as a nation out of Egypt.
Seventy Weeks are Old Testament code words meaning a period of seven years. Here is how we know this:
In the book of Genesis chapter 29, Jacob has arrived at the home of his uncle Laban. Having fallen in love with Rachel, Laban’s younger daughter, he requests permission from Laban to marry Rachel. At this time, when a young man wanted to marry a young woman, it was necessary that he pays to his intended bride’s father, a “Dowry”.
A dowry was really just alimony in advance. If the young man turned out to be a real scoundrel and mistreated his new bride or worse, ran off and abandoned her, then the father of the bride had this fund that had been paid in advance by the groom that would be used to provide for her needs.
Jacob apparently did not have the money necessary, so under the terms of the Dowry, a young man could work for the father of the bride for a specified period of time, usually seven years. The money that he would otherwise be paid during this seven years, went into a fund for the daughter as her Dowry.
Being the deceptive man that Laban was, he did not tell Jacob all the terms of the dowry contract to Jacob. In their tradition, they married the oldest sister first, then the younger.
After the seven years were complete, on the night of their wedding as it was dark in the tent, and Jacob could not see his bride when she was brought in to meet him. At first light the next morning, much to Jacob’s surprise, he had consummated a marriage with Leah, Rachel’s older sister.
Laban the father, had a very simple solution to the who problem, Jacob “Fulfill the week of Rachel” as you have already fulfilled the week of Leah, then you can have both sisters as your wives.
25 So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?”
26 And Laban said, “It must not be done so in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.
27 Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one ( Rachel) also for the service which you will serve with me still another seven years.”
28 Then Jacob did so and fulfilled her week. So he gave him his daughter Rachel as wife also.
Notice that the Bible has it all, intrigue, romance, deception, redemption and a happy ending. You don’t have to watch the soap opera’s on TV, just read your Bible.
In any event, notice that the context here in this interesting story of love and deception, that the tern “Week” is defined by a period of time of “Seven years”
When we come back to our story in Daniel chapter 9, and hear Gabriel tell Daniel that “Seventy Weeks are determined for your people”, we know that the angel is speaking of a period 70 times 7 years, or a total of 490 years.
The prophecy states that upon the pronouncement of a “Command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem, that there shall be seven weeks, and then sixty two weeks.
25 “Know therefore and understand, That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks
What does the prophecy say will happen at the end of the 7 weeks and 62 weeks?
“The Messiah the Prince will come”.
Now the real question here is “When did the command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem” come in history? The context here is speaking of Israel being granted permission to leave Babylon and return to Israel to rebuild Jerusalem which was in ruins.
Encyclopedia Britannica defines the exact moment that this command was given: March 14, 445 B. C.
On this day in history, a decree went out from Artaxerexes Longimones that all those who desired, could return to Israel from Babylon.
Artaxerxes Longimones ascended to the throne of the Medo-Persian empire in July 465 B.C. (Encyclopedia Britannica, 1990 ed.). The twentieth year of his reign would have begun in July 446 B.C. The decree occurred approximately nine months later in the month of Nisan (March/April on our calendar).
By Hebrew tradition when the day of the month is not specifically stated (as in Artaxerxes decree), it is given to be the first day of that month. Consequently, the very day of Artaxerxes’ decree was the first day of the Hebrew month Nisan in 445 B.C. The first day of Nisan in 445 B.C. corresponds to the 14th day of March.
These dates were confirmed through astronomical calculations at the British Royal Observatory and reported by Sir Robert Anderson (Robert Anderson, “The Coming Prince”, Kregel. Reprinted in 1984.)
Counting forward from March 14, 445 B.C, exactly 483 years as Gabriel had told Daniel, we come to the date in history of April 6, 32 A.D.
Did anything of importance happen on April 6th, 32 A. D?
1 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,
2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me.
3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”
4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:
5 “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”
6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them.
7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them.
8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!’ Hosanna in the highest!”
This was Palm Sunday, four days before Jesus would be crucified, What did Daniel’s prophecy state?
“That from the going forth of the command To restore and build Jerusalem Until Messiah the Prince, There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks”
Gabriel told Daniel the exact day that Jesus would come to Jerusalem and be proclaimed as the Messiah, 483 years, or 173,88o days after Artaxerxes gave the Jews permission to return to Jerusalem from their captivity in Babylon.
The rest of Daniel chapter 9 says this:
26 “And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;
After the Messiah arrives, what will happen to Him? He will be “Cut off”
There is an important principle in Bible study called “The principle of first mentioned” that states that “Wherever you find the first place a term or word is mentioned in the Bible, this is most likely the best definition of that word or term.
The first mentioned place in the Bible where the term “Cut off” is found is in Genesis 9:11 where the Lord says that “Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood”. At the flood of Noah, all people on the earth perished except Noah and his family, they were “Cut off”.
When Daniel states that after this period of 483 years the Messiah will be “Cut off”, he is specifying that He will be killed.
Isn’t it amazing that the Book of Daniel speaks with precision, describing events that will not happen for 700 more years.
And the people of the prince who is to come Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end of it shall be with a flood, And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
This is where we must pay special attention to detail: Daniel’s prophecy states that there will be a “Prince who will come”, and that he will be descended from those who shall destroy the city of Jerusalem and the Temple.
In 70 A.D. The Roman army came into Jerusalem and completely destroyed the city and the Temple.
The book of Daniel chapter 9 states that there will be a future “Prince” who will come in the “Last Days” that will be from this revived Roman Empire that came in 70 A.D. and destroyed Jerusalem.
This “Prince who is to come” is the topic of our study this morning. Who is he, how will the world recognize him when he arrives on the scene?
His Entrance will be marked by an ability to bring peace into a situation that has formerly had no peace. The greatest call in Israel today is that someone could make peace between the Israeli’s and the Palestinians.
I find it very interesting that the reports that are coming out now as to why President Obama was able to secure a Peace Prize so early in his presidency, was in the hope that he might have successes in the area of peace in the future:
Notice this interesting paragraph in this Saturday’s Washington Post spoken by President Obama himself:
“I know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievements, it’s also been used as a means to give momentum to a ser of causes”
The Washington Post continues in its observation of President Obama’s statement by adding:
“Obama is pushing to restart the Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations…”
Daniel 9 verse 27 says that when this man arrives who shall be the antichrist, he will make a covenant, a peace plan with many for one week.
27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; But in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate, Even until the consummation, which is determined, Is poured out on the desolate.
Jesus warned Israel of this coming “Abomination of Desolation” in Matthew chapter 24:
15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand),
16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house.
18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes.
19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!
20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath.
21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.
The “Abomination of Desolation” will occur at the mid-point of the seven-year Tribulation period. At 3 ½ years, the third person in the unholy trinity, the “False Prophet”, will cause a statue of the beast erected in the newly rebuilt temple in Jerusalem, to come alive and command all the world to worship the first beast, the Antichrist.
Revelation 13:11, 15
11 Then I saw another beast (the False Prophet) coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon.
15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.
The Book of Revelation vividly describes all of the events that will occur shortly after this peace agreement is signed for a period of seven years.
Whether President Obama may meet the criteria for this world leader that the Bible describes as “the beast”, only time will tell. What is certain is that no one in all of history has captured the world’s attention like Barack Obama, and has been given the tools that will be needed for a future of making peace in the middle east.
If in the coming months, President Obama begins to make those steps that lead to a peace agreement between the Palestinians and the nation of Israel that is specified as being for seven years, then “Lift up your eyes for your redemption is drawn near.”
Either at the time this agreement is reached, or shortly thereafter, the Rapture of the church will occur as Jesus “descends out of heaven with a shout and all of us who love Him will meet Him in the clouds, in the air.”
The following are some of the other Biblical References to who and what this world leader will be and do when he does arrive on the scene:
He Will Be:
An intellectual genius: Dan 7:20; 8:23; Ezek 28:3
An persuasive orator: Dan 7:20; Rev 13:2
A shrewd political manipulator: Dan 11:21
A successful commercial genius: Dan 8:25; Rev 13:17; Ps 52:7; Dan 11:38, 43; Ezek 28:4,5
A forceful military leader: Dan 8:24; Rev 6:2; Rev 13:4; Isa 4:16
A powerful organizer: Rev 13:1,2; 17:17
A unifying religious guru: 2 Thess 2:4 (“Allah”?); Rev 13:3, 14, 15
Whomever this world ruler is found to be in the last days, it is certain that he will make his entrance by a peace treaty between Israel and the Palestinian people for seven years.
Watch and pray, it won’t be long now…
