Promise of a Redeemer
In the Book of Genesis chapter 3, Adam sets a course that causes all men after him to become sinners. As Adam eats of the fruit and his eyes are opened to a knowledge of good and evil, his relationship with God is changed from one who walks with God to one whom hides from God.
As the Lord comes to Adam he cries out to him, “Adam where are you”, not in anger or in an attempt to scold him, but in the tender voice of a brokenhearted father who cannot find his child.
“Adam where are you… Where are you and I at now Adam in our relationship? You used to seek me out for fellowship, now you are hiding from me, Adam where are you….“
The reality of sin is that it causes us to hide from God. Either in guilt over the sin, or in love of the sin, human beings hide from their creator and fellowship between the two is lost.
The fall of Adam destroyed his close relationship with God and alienated him from his creator. It not only changed forever Adam’s relationship with God, but also all those who would come after Adam. Each human being would inherit that same fatal flaw of inability to be completely perfect in their moral behavior.
Adams sin caused all of our sin, and from the moment of his decision to eat the fruit, the entire universe was changed forever.
In this first prophecy of the Bible in Genesis Chapter 3 verse 15, the Lord promises a redeemer who will come and restore this broken relationship between God and man.
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”
The once glorious Lucifer, most beautiful and magnificent of all angels, has himself fallen and has now corrupted Adam and Eve’s relationship with God. In the same chapter that the fall of man occurs, the Lord is quick to promise a redeemer. One who will comes and “Bruise the head”of the serpent, satan, and destroy his power over man forever.
This amazing first prophecy in the Bible depicts the attempt by satan to kill Jesus at the cross, with the effects of Jesus death being that of only “Bruising his heel”. Unknown to satan, at Jesus death and resurrection, final victory was won over death and sin forever as Jesus “Bruises the Head” of satan.
A person might bruise their heel and they will eventually recover from it, but bruise the head of a man and you can cause his swift death. Although Genesis 3:15 seems subtle, the true meaning of this small but powerful verse has lasted throughout the course of human history and has set men free.
The application of Genesis 3:15 is that even in the midst of all of our failures before God, He is merciful, loving and willing to remove our sin and restore our relationship with Him the moment we call upon Him. Because of this first prophecy in the Bible, all people throughout time have known that there is a Savior who gave His life for all of us. All that is necessary for any person to have their sins forgiven and eternal life to be theirs, is to call upon the name of Jesus in true repentance and a sincere faith in Jesus death and resurrection.
This first prophecy in the Bible is the foundation for all other prophecies. The Promise of a redeemer, fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ 2,000 years ago for all men.
