You Are Dying

I was watching an old syndicated “House” television program on satellite and at the expected end of the show a young woman who had been explored for the past hour to find out what was medically wrong with her, was given the sudden news that she had a terminal illness.

Her response “I am dying?” caused me to think about the human condition that we all posses. We are all dying, little by little, day by day, here a little, there a little, our time on this earth is fixed and definite.

In a conversation with my wife one morning we were discussing illness and death and I made this same statement, “But we are all dying anyway”. I think that it shocked my bride and perhaps even confused her a little. She asked me “What do you mean?” I told her that the Bible describes the human condition in the purest most uncomplicated way. From the moment we are born, we are dying. The results of what happened with Adam and Eve 6,000 years ago. The Lord told Adam and Eve that the day that they ate from the fruit, “In dying you shall die”. In other words, the moment the fruit touches your lips a permanent change will happen in every cell of your body. You will begin to die and you will continue to die until finally you will die.

It the spiritual sense, this death continues long after the body ceases to function. In the eternal realm, the spirit as it leaves the lifeless body, dies an eternal death being separated from God’s presence forever. That is of course unless that human being takes the anti-toxin, the antidote, the remedy for sin, the blood of Jesus Christ shed for that person on a Roman Cross 2,000 years ago.

The Bible says that the only cure for the dying condition of the human being both physical and spiritual, is the sacrifice that Jesus made on the Cross where His life was exchanged for all our lives. In a mystery completely unknown to most of us, the Living God offered His life in exchange for ours in an effort that succeeded in satisfying His righteous law and paid the debt we owed for our sin. The infinite value of Jesus life as God in a human body, was costly enough to pay the debt of every human being and remove the death sentence that began the moment we first drew breath.

From the moment any person believes that Jesus died for them, confesses that they are a hopeless sinner in need of a savior and helpless to save themselves, the Love of God floods their spirit soul and body with eternal life and stops the dying process forever. That is at least for the spirit and the soul. The body will continue it’s onward dying process until it is completed or Jesus comes for us at the Rapture. In the end of that physical life, the power that raised Jesus from the dead will also raise back to life even that dying and eventual dead body again and make it also eternal.

So, yes we are all dying in one way or another, but we do not have to continue in this process until it is complete. Anyone can call upon the name of Jesus at any moment while still in this earthy body and stop the dying and eventual death process.

“For whoever calls upon the name of Jesus will be saved”
