Colossians 2:8-10 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.
It is interesting that once we come to Jesus and receive Him as our Savior, at some point months or years later, we start to imagine that perhaps we were not really saved at all.
Think for a moment about your life before you received Jesus into your heart. Were you ever worried about whether or not you were saved? Of course not. Most of us really gave no thought about our salvation because we were too busy with our lives.
Why then do those who accept Jesus as their Savior, start to have doubts about whether or not they are actually saved, long after they have made their confession of faith?
The answer is detailed and complex.
First, at some point in the life of a new believer, we begin to realize that although we have become a follower of Jesus, we are still struggling with sin issues in our life. Many people believe that once they become a Christian and start to walk with Jesus, that sin will no longer be a pressing issue in their life.
I wish that this were true.
The fact is that when Jesus saves us, He makes our spirit alive again to Him, but our bodies He completely ignores. The flesh that we live in is so utterly given over to sin, that there is no hope of redeeming it. Only at death does the believer in Jesus Christ finally experience freedom from the presence of sin.
As long as you live in your body, even as a follower of Jesus, you will always struggle with sin. There will be victories over the sin issues of your life, but the root cause of your struggle with sin will never go away as long as you are alive in your body. Many years later, some of the sin struggles that you thought you had overcome, will once again reappear and give you problems in your life.
When a person realizes that they repeatedly have struggles with sin, they begin to wonder if they were really saved at all in the first place.
Second, the reason that many start to doubt their salvation is that the enemy, the devil, creates doubts in our life by these struggles with sin, to make us believe we really were not save at all and that there is no hope for us.
I have spoken to many people over the years who have sincerely told me that there was no use in me praying for them because it was too late for them. They imagined that the sins that they had committed were so many and so terrible that even Jesus could not help them.
This is how the devil lies to us.
The truth is, that it really does not matter how terrible your sins might be. Nor how long you have been in this state as a sinner. The Blood of Jesus Christ is so powerful and perfect that it can cleanse any person from all of their sin.
1 John 1:7 ...the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
Paul wrote to the Christians at the church in Colosse to remind them that all of these issues over the struggle with sin and the power that the flesh we live in has over us, are really meaningless.
“We are complete in Jesus”.
This means that when you lay down at the foot of Jesus Cross and acknowledge before Him that you are a sinner in need of the cleansing power of His Blood, You are made perfect by the sacrifice Jesus made for you.
There no longer remains any stain of any past, present or future sin in your life. Though you will continue to struggle with sin, all of these sins are covered by Jesus one sacrifice for you.
Today as you walk with Jesus, remember that you are complete in Him. All of your sins are no more. Even the constant ever present sins that plague you day after day are covered by Jesus blood. You are perfect now in the eyes of your Father in Heaven. There is nothing else that you need to do to be saved, nothing else you can do to be loved any more than you are already loved. Just enjoy the love and acceptance that is now yours. When you sin, confess it and understand that at the moment you do confess any sin, it is placed under the blood of Jesus sacrifice and your fellowship with God is restored.
Ephesians 2:1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins…
Colossians 2:13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses…
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit…
