Daily Walk: Why Bad Things Happen to Good People

Psalms 14:3 They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one.

Romans 3:12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”

The answer to this question is not one that many people will like, nor want to believe:

The reason that bad things happen to good people is that according to the Word of God, there are no truly good people. Human understanding of goodness is based on our limited understanding of what goodness is truly all about.

According to God’s Word, only God is truly good:

Mark 10:18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.

The mark of true goodness is perfect righteousness. The requirement for admission into heaven is perfect righteousness. Since all human beings born from the line of Adam have the defect of sin, they do not have the capacity to be perfect in righteousness.

One of the purposes of Jesus coming to the earth as God in the body of a man, descended from Adam, was to be the second Adam who was born and lived as a perfect man. As in Adam all men are sinners, those born in Jesus Christ are all righteous. Perfect righteousness.

1Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.

Although a believer in Jesus Christ still lives in their old body, within is a new spirit that had been “Born Again” by the Spirit of God. This new spirit desires righteousness, despite the constant battle to not sin. Every person who is born again will still commit sin while they live inside their present body. This is the reason that Jesus came to die. All past, present, and future sins were paid for by Jesus at the Cross He died upon.

Those who believe and look to Jesus’ Cross as the payment for their sins, have the assurance that even the sins they struggle with everyday, are covered by Jesus precious blood.

Because we know what it cost Jesus, and that our sins today will be covered by His Blood, we desire with all of our heart to not ever sin again. Having the forgiveness of sins is not a license to sin as much as we want, it is a reminder of what Jesus suffered for us so that we never want to sin again.

Good people suffer because we live in a fallen world that is presently under the limited dominion of satan.

One of the purposes of Jesus dying on the Cross was to also redeem the earth back to God. When Jesus returns with all of those who love Him at the end of the seven-year Tribulation, He will take possession of the earth and rule it with absolute power and dominion.

Until that time, the suffering and cruelty that we see on the earth is what life is like when satan rules the earth. Good people suffer, are murdered, taken advantage of and loose all their earthly possessions while evil men prosper, become rich and seem to have all that life offers. Do not be deceived by thinking that God does not care about evil or that unrighteousness will forever go without recompense.

Acts 17:31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.

Ezekiel 33:11 Say to them: “As I live,” says the Lord GOD, “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die?”

There is a day appointed in which Jesus Christ will judge all the deeds of evil men and give to them their just punishment. Because the day of this judgement seems to be delayed, we should not think that judgment will not come. God is presently being patient with the evil men of this world because He loves even them, and hopes that they will turn from their sins and be saved.

2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

God’s long-suffering will not endure forever, and He will not always strive with man over his sins. Very soon Jesus will arrive on the earth and then all sins, evil and unrighteousness will come to and end.

Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.

Today as we walk with our Lord, we should remember that the only reason anyone is saved and goes to heaven, is because of God’s goodness and Mercy, not because we are good enough and deserve heaven. We should be vigilant to pray for the evil men of this world that they will repent and turn to Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins and not have to see God’s judgment at Jesus’ return.
