Mark 12:30 “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” This is the first commandment.
This morning I came to the realization that I should repent of an evil of my heart. For several months I have had as a constant goal, the desire to get back to Bantayan Island to continue my ministry there. I have been preoccupied with the busy days of preparing my home for sale, conducting weekend yard sales and the dreams of crystal blue waters and white sand beaches with dear people waiting for us to return.
My need for repentance is from a heart that has allowed my goals and dreams to supersede my desire to obtain God. To know Him and Love Him more than all other earthly things, was casually swept aside while my busy preoccupation focused all my thoughts on my own goals. Lord forgive me.
To Love the Lord with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, is the highest and most constant goal of the one who claims to follow Jesus Christ. It is not that He is our source to fulfill all of our dreams of a better life, He is our life. The words of the 73rd Psalm give light to what our intended goal should be:
Psalms 73:25 Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
The Lord is the intended goal for which all of us were created. Although the Lord promised to meet all of our needs, He did not promise to make Himself second to all of our selfish desires. He will not help us to achieve our goals and dreams so that He would become second to them. For many of us in Jesus’ church today, we use the Lord to help us get ahead in the world, while leaving Him behind in our thoughts and affections.
I woke this morning and realized that I had let the true goal of my life slip away into a second or third place, behind other aspirations. When I was first saved by Jesus, my constant and everyday goal was to just know God in a deeper and more intimate way than any man had ever known Him. Over the course of many years as I have been working in the ministry that the Lord has given me, that goal of just knowing Him has slipped away without my notice. I write this daily walk today in hopes of encouraging you in your search for what is most important. Perhaps you’re like me, have strayed from the simple desire of knowing and obtaining Jesus above everything else.
May we today in our walk with the Lord, continue to seek Him everyday for all of our needs, but also remember that above all these needs, goals, hopes and dreams, our primary heart’s desire is to know Him, and Love Him with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength.
