Genesis 11:6 And the LORD said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.
One of the greatest dangers in the Body of Christ is that of divisions and disunity. It seems to be a mark of the church of the last days that those who claim to follow Jesus, spend an increasing amount of time in the telling and hearing of gossip. Of even greater danger is the backbiting that occurs in churches where the personal integrity and reputation of the individual members of the church are destroyed by the negative comments made by those who claim to be followers of Jesus.
On the opposite and more positive side of disunity, is that of Unity in the Body of Christ. When believers are united in once common mind and goal, there is nothing that is impossible to them.
In the book of Genesis, chapter 11, the inhabitants of the earth had just one language after the flood of Noah. Because they all understood each other, they were able to be united in one common goal. Unfortunately, that goal was towards evil. When any people, be they good or evil, are united in one common goal, they can accomplish almost anything.
If the members of Jesus church could unite themselves in one common love and desire to reach the unsaved of the world, the whole earth could be saved and know of Jesus great love and sacrifice. Instead, we spend countless wasted hours tearing at each other until we are fractured and broken as a usable body for Jesus.
The church at Corinth was a first century congregation that was materialistic, self centered, and constantly at odds with each other in causing disunity. Paul wrote the the Corinthians in pleading that they would begin to be “like minded” and cease from their divisions in the church.
1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
As we seek to walk with our Lord today, may we repent of our past spoken and heard gossips, and negative comments that we have spoken about other people. May we make it our firm commitment to work towards unity amongst those in our church and our Christian family. As we set the atmosphere towards unity and refuse to bring anything into the church that causes disunity, we will find that we are better able to reach those who have not heard about how wonderful Jesus is.
It is for certain that those who are watching us to see what it is like to follow Jesus, will be drawn to him as they see how much we love each other and nurture our relationships by being of one mind and one heart.
