Tony Blair Often Read His Bible in Making Decisions

The Prime Minister of Britain often spent the night reading his Bible before making the really big decisions during his term in office.

Alastair Campbell was the press secretary for Tony Blair during his term in office. He recorded in his diaries that on the night before the bombing of Iraq, Tony Blair had second thoughts after reading the story of King Herod and John the Baptist in the New Testament.

In the story of John the Baptist, Herod was unduly influenced by others in making the decision to execute John the Baptist. In the last part of Mark chapter 6: verse 26 the scripture records that “The King was exceedingly sorry (For his decision) yet because of the oaths (He went ahead and carried out the execution).

Mark 6:21-26 “Then an opportune day came when Herod on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee. And when Herodias’ daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” He also swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom.” So she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist!” Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her.”

Prime minister Blair felt as if he had been influenced by the decisions of President Bush and others to support the bombing of Iraq but in his heart he had some reservations.

This is why it is always good advice to continue to pray for the leaders of nations that they will be guided and directed by the Lord to make the right decisions.

When Nebuchadnezzar proclaimed that the great kingdom that he headed was all of his making, the Bible records that at that moment the King was driven by the Lord out into the fields where he began to eat grass like a cow for seven years. Nebuchadnezzar remained in this condition until he announced that it was the Lord who exalts men to positions of authority and places them over countries and governments for His own good purposes.

Daniel 4:25 “They shall drive you from men, your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and they shall make you eat grass like oxen. They shall wet you with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over you, till you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever He chooses.”

Whether men feel that it is necessary to seek counsel of the Lord and His Word or not, it is for certain that the master plan for all of the ages is in the hand of the One who made the heavens and the earth.

Those men and women who do seek the wise counsel of the Lord in His Word are those who will be known in all the ages to come, as the brightest and wisest of all the kings and rulers of man’s history. In this present world they will be laughed at and ridiculed for following the “invisible God”. But when the final word is given, men like Tony Blair and George Bush who lived out their faith in the everyday decisions of their life will be found pleasing to the Lord on the day of Jesus revealing.
