Signs of Jesus Return: Persecution of His followers

Signs of Jesus Return: Persecution of His followers

More than 100 religion-based organizations are protesting a provision in pending legislation that would prohibit them from receiving federal money if they consider a job applicant’s religion when hiring. In a letter sent Wednesday to all members of Congress, the groups contend that the provision would dilute protections they have under the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, as well as under the Constitution. “Those four lines in the legislation would be a seismic change in bedrock civil rights law for religious organizations,” said Steven McFarland, chief legal counsel at World Vision USA, a Christian aid organization that is leading the protest. “The impact would be huge and severely affect our ability to help children and others in need.” The provision is in legislation to reauthorize the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which makes grants to nonprofit social service organizations. While many of the groups signing the letter do not get money from the agency, they say the language of the provision is so broad it will affect other, unrelated sources of federal grants. World Vision, for example, received more than $300 million in cash, goods and services from federal sources last year, while the Salvation Army received almost $400 million from federal, state and local governments.

Online Ministries Denied Tax Exempt Status

Online Ministries Denied Tax Exempt Status

God may be listening, but the IRS isn’t — or at least, not if you’re preaching online. The federal tax agency won a victory Monday for its decision not to grant church status to a religious organization that primarily conducts its worship services via radio and internet, reports theNational Law Journal. Why would it matter? Becasue non-church non-profits are subject to greater regulatory scrutiny and oversight than are churches.
The Foundation of Human Understanding, “based upon Judeo-Christian beliefs and the doctrine and teachings of its founder,” Roy Masters, had appealed the IRS classification to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where a three-judge panel waded into the murky waters of church classification precedent. Despite what Federal Circuit Judge William Bryson said was a decided dearth of guidance about how to apply the “church” label, the panel largely looked to the associational test, which requires that members meet regularly for organized worship. Not good news for the Foundation of Human Understanding. “The fact that all the listeners simultaneously received the Foundation’s message over the radio or the Internet does not mean that those members associated with each other and worshiped communally,” Bryson wrote.

Killed For Serving Jesus in Afghanistan

Killed For Serving Jesus in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Their last meal was a picnic in the forest in the Sharrun Valley, high in the Hindu Kush mountains of northern Afghanistan. Returning home from a three-week trek on foot to deliver free medical care to the remotest regions of the country, the aid workers — six Americans, a Briton, a German and four Afghans — had just finished eating when they were accosted by gunmen with long dyed-red beards, the police said. The gunmen marched them into the forest, stood them in a line and shot 10 of them one by one. The police found their bodies, seven men and three women, on Friday, the Badakhshan Province police chief, Gen. Aqa Noor Kentoz, said Saturday.

Florida Schools Ban Bibles on Religious Freedom Day

Florida Schools Ban Bibles on Religious Freedom Day

Maitland-based Liberty Counsel filed a lawsuit Thursday to overturn a ban on Bible distribution on public school campuses in Collier County. According to the Liberty Counsel, the Collier County School Board allowed World Changers to distribute free Bibles to students during off-school hours on Religious Freedom Day, but now the school officials claim that Bibles do not provide any educational benefit to the students and the distribution should stop. The Collier County School District policy specifically allows the distribution of literature by nonprofit organizations, but only with the approval of the superintendent and the Community Request Committee, whose members are appointed by the superintendent. Approval was denied to World Changers, despite the fact that its distribution included a disclaimer of any school endorsement or sponsorship and that receiving a Bible was purely voluntary.

    Terror Group Targets Christians

    Terror Group Targets Christians

Seven Israeli Arabs affiliated with al-Qaida and Global Jihad have been arrested for allegedly murdering a taxi driver last year, and carrying out a series of terrorist attacks, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) revealed on Monday. In a joint police-Shin Bet operation, Ahmed Ahmed, 21, Jalib Janam, 26, Wassim Allam, 23, Khidar Ziddana, 22, Ahbed Abu-Salim, 19, Adi Azzam, 23, and Oman Kakhibi, 22, all Nazareth residents, were arrested between May 11 and June 21. All seven were indicted Monday at the Haifa District Court. Dep.-Cmdr. Avi Elgrisi, Head of Amakim Police’s Central Unit told The Jerusalem Post that “this is one of the most dangerous cells we have uncovered.” The investigation was initially focused on two suspects, before being widened to include a total of seven suspects, he said, adding that police are expected to make more arrests in connection with the investigation. The Shin Bet also found that after the murder, Ahmed and Janam attempted to travel to an al-Qaida training camp in Somalia to join the fighting against the Christian “heretics” as well as against the US, but were barred from entering Somalia at the Kenyan border.

Supreme Court Nominee for Redistributing Speech

Supreme Court Nominee for Redistributing Speech

Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan said the high court should be focused on ferreting out improper governmental motives when deciding First Amendment cases, arguing that the government’s reasons for restricting free speech were what mattered most and not necessarily the effect of those restrictions on speech. Kagan, the solicitor general of the United States under President Obama, expressed that idea in her 1996 article in the University of Chicago Law Review entitled, “Private Speech, Public Purpose: The Role of Governmental Motive in First Amendment Doctrine.”

In her article, Kagan said that examination of the motives of government is the proper approach for the Supreme Court when looking at whether a law violates the First Amendment. While not denying that other concerns, such as the impact of a law, can be taken into account, Kagan argued that governmental motive is “the most important” factor.

Hundreds Slaughtered in Nigeria Religious Violence

Hundreds Slaughtered in Nigeria Religious Violence

DOGO NAHAWA, Nigeria (AP) — The killers showed no mercy: They didn’t spare women and children, or even a 4-day-old baby, from their machetes. On Monday, Nigerian women wailed in the streets as a dump truck carried dozens of bodies past burned-out homes toward a mass grave.
Rubber-gloved workers pulled ever-smaller bodies from the dump truck and tossed them into the mass grave. A crowd began singing a hymn with the refrain, “Jesus said I am the way to heaven.” As the grave filled, the grieving crowd sang: “Jesus, show me the way.”
At least 200 people, most of them Christians, were slaughtered on Sunday, according to residents, aid groups and journalists. The local government gave a figure more than twice that amount, but offered no casualty list or other information to substantiate it.

Top Ten Anti-Christian Attacks in 2009

Top Ten Anti-Christian Attacks in 2009

VISTA, Calif., Jan. 4 /Christian Newswire/ — The Christian Anti-Defamation Commission (CADC) has released its list of the top ten incidents of anti-Christian defamation, bigotry and discrimination in the US from last year. The list was selected by the subscribers to CADC’s e-mail list and was selected from a list of twenty of CADC’s top stories from 2009.
“It is arguable that anti-Christian hatred has spilled over into material forms of persecution in 2009,” said Dr. Gary Cass of the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission. “Christians were killed and bullied for their witness, ministers and churches threatened with violence and vandalized for standing for marriage, and Christians were fired for not compromising their faith. If these are not bona fide examples of persecution, than I wonder what more it might take?”

    An Answer To Their Prayers

    An Answer To Their Prayers

“Why do you continue these meetings?” the secret policeman asked the Christian. “Do you think your neighbors wouldn’t report you to us?”
The young man was a new Christian, but already he had led twenty others to Christ. They were praying that God would provide them a place to gather and worship together.
For three weeks, the North African Christians met in an apartment—an illegal gathering that could lead to their arrest. Their praise and singing alerted the neighbors, who reported them to the secret police. Three times the young Christian had been hauled in for questioning.

They are currently at home with their family, but could face more court hearings in the future. “Words are not enough to express our gratitude to the Lord and to His people who have prayed and worked for our release,” they said, according to Elam.

Open Doors USA President/CEO Dr. Carl Moeller, whose group works with persecuted Christians, responded to news of their release:“Praise the Lord for the great news out of Iran today of the release of Maryam and Marzieh. Judge Strikes Down Christian License Plate

Judge Strikes Down Christian License Plate

U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie said the specialty license plate was motivated by a purpose to advance a specific religion and has the effect of state endorsement of Christianity.

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, praised the decision, commenting, “Government must never be allowed to express favored treatment for one faith over others. That’s unconstitutional and un-American.”

State lawmakers had unanimously passed legislation last summer authorizing the plates. Republican Senator Lawrence K. Grooms, one of the sponsors of the bill, said he didn’t see a constitutional problem with it, noting that the state issued plates with other religious symbols and phrases.

Soldiers Reported that Fort Hood Gunman Shouted “Allah Akbar!”

Soldiers Reported that Fort Hood Gunman Shouted “Allah Akbar!”

FORT HOOD, Texas – As if going off to war, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan cleaned out his apartment, gave leftover frozen broccoli to one neighbor and called another to thank him for his friendship — common courtesies and routines of the departing soldier. Instead, authorities say, he went on the killing spree that left 13 people at Fort Hood, Texas, dead.
Investigators examined Hasan’s computer, his home and his garbage Friday to learn what motivated the suspect, who lay in a coma, shot four times in the frantic bloodletting. Hospital officials said some of the wounded had extremely serious injuries and might not survive.
The 39-year-old Army psychiatrist emerged as a study in contradictions: a polite man who stewed with discontent, a counselor who needed to be counseled himself, a professional healer now suspected of cutting down the fellow soldiers he was sworn to help.

Home Depot Fired Man Over God Button

Home Depot Fired Man Over God Button

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A former cashier for The Home Depot who has been wearing a “One nation under God” button on his work apron for more than a year has been fired, he says because of the religious reference. The company claims that expressing such personal beliefs is simply not allowed.
“I’ve worn it for well over a year and I support my country and God,” Trevor Keezor said Tuesday. “I was just doing what I think every American should do, just love my country.”
The American flag button Keezer wore in the Florida store since March 2008 says “One nation under God, indivisible.”
Earlier this month, he began bringing a Bible to read during his lunch break at the store in the rural town of Okeechobee, about 140 miles north of Miami. That’s when he says The Home Depot management told him he would have to remove the button.

St. Louis pays $80,000 for Censoring Christians

The city of St. Louis has agreed to pay $80,000 for censoring the speech of Christians during a “gay” pride festival on city property, according to the Alliance Defense Fund.

The law organization represented the plaintiffs in a case brought over the censorship, and it announced yesterday it had voluntarily sought dismissal of the lawsuit after the city’s offending policy had been struck down and the city agreed to pay damages and costs of the case.

“Christian groups shouldn’t be banned from public areas for expressing their beliefs,” said Rick Nelson of the American Liberties Institute, who served as lead counsel in the case and is allied with the ADF

    The Fellowship of His Suffering

    The Fellowship of His Suffering

“That I may know Him and the power of his ressurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.”

Often when I have suffered in the past, I have wondered why the Lord would permit such things to happen to me in my life. I know that He loves me and He has forever proven the truth of His love by His incredible death upon the Cross. Even so, I think that very often when we are in a trial, it seems that we forget everything else around us and are directed in our heart to only one place, our suffering and how we feel at that particular moment.

Teach the Bible, Go to Jail?

Teach the Bible, Go to Jail?

If you will study the history of the erosion of American rights, you will discover that every right that is taken away from the American people began by laws that initially did not take away the right, but opened the door for a form of the rights to be limited. Within a short period of time after the initial bill, stronger laws are written that erodes the original freedom guaranteed by our Constitution.

Traditionally, hate crime legislation has been used to subdue religious free speech. Most of the current legislation for the hate crime bill comes from the homosexual movement whereby in their advancement of homosexuality and marriage by same sex individuals, they also want to make it a crime to criticize or condemn this lifestyle. This bill would call for stiffer penalties against someone who hurts or defames a homosexual as appose to just a regular person. In essence it gives special standing to someone who has chosen this alternative life style.

    Are You Prepared for Persecution?

    Are You Prepared for Persecution?

As Christians in America we are insulated for the most part from persecution, at least for the present time. We forget that believers in many parts of the world suffer and die every day because they simply Love Jesus and desire to make Him known. It would be wise for us to begin to fervently pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ in other countries as the day of Jesus return nears. It is for certain that within a short period of time we also here on American soil may find ourselves arrested and jailed for simply sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.
