Signs of the Last Days: Teens Becoming ‘Fake Christians’

Signs of the Last Days: Teens Becoming ‘Fake Christians’

If you’re the parent of a Christian teenager, Kenda Creasy Dean has this warning: Your child is following a “mutant” form of Christianity, and you may be responsible. Dean says more American teenagers are embracing what she calls “moralistic therapeutic deism.” Translation: It’s a watered-down faith that portrays God as a “divine therapist” whose chief goal is to boost people’s self-esteem. Dean is a minister, a professor at Princeton Theological Seminary and the author of “Almost Christian,” a new book that argues that many parents and pastors are unwittingly passing on this self-serving strain of Christianity. She says this “imposter” faith is one reason teenagers abandon churches. “If this is the God they’re seeing in church, they are right to leave us in the dust,” Dean says. “Churches don’t give them enough to be passionate about.”

Signs of Jesus Return: Persecution of His followers

More than 100 religion-based organizations are protesting a provision in pending legislation that would prohibit them from receiving federal money if they consider a job applicant’s religion when hiring. In a letter sent Wednesday to all members of Congress, the groups contend that the provision would dilute protections they have under the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, as well as under the Constitution. “Those four lines in the legislation would be a seismic change in bedrock civil rights law for religious organizations,” said Steven McFarland, chief legal counsel at World Vision USA, a Christian aid organization that is leading the protest. “The impact would be huge and severely affect our ability to help children and others in need.” The provision is in legislation to reauthorize the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which makes grants to nonprofit social service organizations. While many of the groups signing the letter do not get money from the agency, they say the language of the provision is so broad it will affect other, unrelated sources of federal grants. World Vision, for example, received more than $300 million in cash, goods and services from federal sources last year, while the Salvation Army received almost $400 million from federal, state and local governments.

Obama Sends 6 Million to Muslim Sites

Obama Sends 6 Million to Muslim Sites

President Barack Obama’s faith may not be clearly identifiable, but he’s willing to usurp the U.S. Constitutional principle of a strict separation of church and state when it comes to using American taxpayer dollars to restore Muslim holy places. According to the Houston Chronicle, “the good will tour of the Middle East by the imam behind the proposed mosque near ground zero is just part of the U.S. government’s efforts to reach out to the Muslim world.” The Obama administration, this year, will spend almost $6 million to restore 63 cultural and historic sites that include mosques and minarets, in 55 countries, as revealed by State Department documents. In 2001 under a program created by Congress, the department will fund a minimum of five projects in as many nations at a cost of more than $271,000. The contributions include the 16th Century Grand Mosque in Tongxin, China at $76,135 and $67,500 for the 18th Century Golden Mosque in Lahore, Pakistan. Additionally, $62,169 will be spent on restoring a 19th century minaret in Mauritania’s ancient city of Tichitt; $50,437 for the Sundarwala Bay, a 16th Century Islamic monument in New Delhi, and $15,450 to restore the 18th Century Gobarau Minaret in Katsina, Nigeria.

Online Ministries Denied Tax Exempt Status

Online Ministries Denied Tax Exempt Status

God may be listening, but the IRS isn’t — or at least, not if you’re preaching online. The federal tax agency won a victory Monday for its decision not to grant church status to a religious organization that primarily conducts its worship services via radio and internet, reports theNational Law Journal. Why would it matter? Becasue non-church non-profits are subject to greater regulatory scrutiny and oversight than are churches.
The Foundation of Human Understanding, “based upon Judeo-Christian beliefs and the doctrine and teachings of its founder,” Roy Masters, had appealed the IRS classification to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, where a three-judge panel waded into the murky waters of church classification precedent. Despite what Federal Circuit Judge William Bryson said was a decided dearth of guidance about how to apply the “church” label, the panel largely looked to the associational test, which requires that members meet regularly for organized worship. Not good news for the Foundation of Human Understanding. “The fact that all the listeners simultaneously received the Foundation’s message over the radio or the Internet does not mean that those members associated with each other and worshiped communally,” Bryson wrote.

Obama, Muslim or Christian: His Spiritual Life

Obama, Muslim or Christian: His Spiritual Life

As he flew aboard Air Force One to Chicago on his 49th birthday earlier this month, President Obama dialed three Christian pastors to pray with him. On an airborne conference call, he kidded with the religious leaders about being abandoned by his wife and daughters, who were away on vacation and at camp. As he celebrated his birthday, he was in a reflective mood. He told them he wanted to pray about the year that had passed, what’s really important in life and the challenges ahead.
“That was simply something that he wanted to do at his initiative because it was important to him,” said Joel Hunter, an evangelical pastor who was on the call and who is part of a small circle of spiritual advisers who frequently talk to Obama by phone. The prayer session, which was not publicized and which neither the White House nor the ministers sought to bring to light, reflects Obama’s decision to keep his public expressions of religious faith to a minimum. Hunter said the president often reaches out to pastors for private spiritual conversation.
Hunter, who is the pastor of Northland Church in Orlando, also advised Obama’s predecessor. George W. Bush routinely invoked his own Christian faith in public. Hunter said that Obama’s reluctance to do so may help explain the results of a Pew Research Center poll released this week that revealed a sizable increase in the number of people who falsely think that Obama is a Muslim.

U.S. and S. Korea Drills Anger N. Korea

U.S. and S. Korea Drills Anger N. Korea

The U.S. and South Korean militaries will stage their second joint exercise in less than a month from Monday, fuelling tensions with the prickly North and angering regional power China. The annual exercise comes a week after Seoul completed its own drills near a disputed maritime border off the west coast that prompted the North to retaliate by firing a barrage of artillery shells in the same area. Responding with the same rhetoric as it has in the past, the reclusive North said the latest exercise was a “dangerous act to light the fuse of a new war.”
Pyongyang has often turned to saber-rattling to make a point but analysts say it is unlikely to risk a full-blown war which would pit it against the combined might of the U.S. and South Korean militaries. But U.S. officials have said further provocations by the North are possible in coming months, especially as Pyongyang tries to build political momentum for the succession to leader Kim Jong-il, expected to hand power to his youngest son. Unlike the show-of-force drills in July which involved a U.S. aircraft carrier, this month’s exercises are lower key. Washington and South Korea say the exercises are defensive and designed to send a message to Pyongyang that its behavior is aggressive and must stop. Last week’s tit-for-tat military actions occurred near the Northern Limit Line, the site of several deadly clashes since the 1950-53 Korean war, and the location of the torpedoing of a South Korean warship earlier this year.

Current World Disasters Could Cause Food Prices to Soar

Current World Disasters Could Cause Food Prices to Soar

WASHINGTON: Fires, floods, locusts and droughts – a combination of crises that could mean higher food prices around the world over the next 12 months. The US agriculture department will released a report today assessing world grain supplies. Many analysts expect it will forecast a two-year low for wheat inventories – an estimate that would likely send wheat prices, which have climbed steadily all summer, moving even higher. Russia, the world’s third-largest wheat exporter, imposed a four-month ban on grain exports last week because of drought. The decision will pull millions of tonnes of wheat out of world markets. The World Bank has urged other nations not to follow suit, fearing a supply crunch like the one that drove 2008 prices to twice their current levels and prompted food riots in Africa and Asia. Severe winter frosts and a summer drought have damaged the crop in Ukraine, the world’s sixth-largest exporter, and Kiev is expected to impose its own export ban later this month.

China Warns US Over Naval Presence in Their Region

China Warns US Over Naval Presence in Their Region

BEIJING (Reuters) – China’s People Liberation Army demanded a tough response to U.S. plans to send an aircraft carrier to naval exercises near its coast, saying that “respect” was at stake. A commentary in the Liberation Army Daily on Thursday laid bare rancor over Washington’s naval exercises with ally South Korea, and over its criticism of Chinese territorial claims to swathes of the South China Sea, where Taiwan and several Southeast Asian states also have claims. “A country needs respect, and a military also needs respect. ‘If someone doesn’t hurt me, I won’t hurt him; but if someone hurts me, I must hurt him,” wrote Major General Luo Yuan in the paper.

“For the Chinese people and the Chinese military, those are by no means idle words.”

The angry commentary in the PLA’s top mouthpiece, carefully vetted by censors, also underscored Chinese military pressures weighing on Beijing as it crafts policy The U.S. and South Korea last month held a joint naval drill in the Sea of Japan off the Korean peninsula, which brought condemnation from China, which answered with its own heavily publicized military exercises.

    The United States is Bankrupt

    The United States is Bankrupt

Let’s get real. The U.S. is bankrupt. Neither spending more nor taxing less will help the country pay its bills. What it can and must do is radically simplify its tax, health-care, retirement and financial systems, each of which is a complete mess. But this is the good news. It means they can each be redesigned to achieve their legitimate purposes at much lower cost and, in the process, revitalize the economy. Last month, the International Monetary Fund released itsannual review of U.S. economic policy. Its summary contained these bland words about U.S. fiscal policy: “Directors welcomed the authorities’ commitment to fiscal stabilization, but noted that a larger than budgeted adjustment would be required to stabilize debt-to-GDP.” But delve deeper, and you will find that the IMF has effectively pronounced the U.S. bankrupt. Section 6 of the July 2010 Selected Issues Paper says: “The U.S. fiscal gap associated with today’s federal fiscal policy is huge for plausible discount rates.” It adds that “closing the fiscal gap requires a permanent annual fiscal adjustment equal to about 14 percent of U.S. GDP.”

The Rise of the Central Banks

The Rise of the Central Banks

Normally, when a country expands its money supply, it will offer bonds to other countries. The lending countries will buy the bonds and then the borrowing country will use that money to issue paper currency to the lending banks at a set interest rate. The problem many countries have now is that lending countries are not buying. This puts the borrowing country in a bind. Since slowing the rate of increase of the money supply will invite a recession (a way for the economy to readjust itself back to reality), politicians will want to “boost” the economy by increasing the money supply. With no one buying a country’s debts, the debtor country is reduced to printing money that is backed by nothing. This is called “monetizing the debt.” Ben Bernanke, the chairman of the United State’s central bank, the Federal Reserve, has been accused of gearing up the printing presses. Of course, in these days of electronic funds transfers (EFT), a printing press isn’t even required. A simple computer entry into a balance sheet will suffice. In the last two years, the United States has put $2.5 trillion into the world’s economy.11 Continuing to expand the money supply in such a manner could cause a hyperinflation only seen in recent history in developing nations and post-World War II Germany. (We will visit the topic of hyperinflation and its effects on society in the third and final section of this series.)

Judge Rejects Demand To Censor Christian Prayer

Judge Rejects Demand To Censor Christian Prayer

A federal judge in New York has rejected a demand from the Americans United for Separation of Church and State that a town board be ordered to change its invocation procedures so that the statements from volunteers on a rotating basis would be more “ecumenical” and “inclusive.” The decision from U.S. District Judge Charles Siragusa said officials in Greece, N.Y., did not violate the Constitution’s Establishment Clause with their tradition of opening meetings with an invocation from local clergy members. Two plaintiffs represented by the Americans United organization had wanted a court order that the town instruct those who deliver prayers to be “inclusive and ecumenical.” “The court finds that the policy requested by plaintiffs would … impose a state-created orthodoxy,” the judge said. “The court has also considered the identities of the prayer-givers and the process that the town employed in inviting clergy to deliver prayers, and finds that these factors did not have the purpose or effect of proselytizing or advancing any one, or disparaging any other, faith or belief, within the meaning of the Establishment Clause.”

    The Mosque at Ground Zero

    The Mosque at Ground Zero

Earlier this week, the proposed New York City mosque at ground zero cleared its final hurdle. Nothing seems to stand in the way of its construction. I am appalled that peace-loving Muslims would want to do this on what is, for most Americans, hallowed ground. I am even more appalled that the mayor of New York is in favor of the idea. It would be like the Japanese building a Shinto shrine at Pearl Harbor! At a speech in front of the statue of liberty, Mayor Bloomberg made the case for the mosque on the grounds of tolerance. But tolerance isn’t the issue here. And certainly not tolerance as Bloomberg means it. Tolerance used to mean listening respectfully to others’ opinions, even when you disagree. Tolerance as Bloomberg understands it, means “I won’t say no to you for anything you want, and you don’t say no to me for anything I want.”-The ultimate expression of political correctness, and the most certain formula for moral chaos. But the construction of the mosque at ground zero is not about tolerance. And it isn’t about religious liberty. This is about prudence: the good sense to do what is right. That’s one of the four classic, cardinal virtues given to the West. Let me give you an example. It isn’t a violation of tolerance or religious liberty when a local zoning commission tells a church, or a synagogue, that it cannot build a sanctuary in a residential neighborhood. Parking issues, traffic, could adversely affect the neighborhood. So, local government can make the prudent decision to tell the church to build somewhere else.

Signs of Antichrist: IMF Blueprint for Global Currency

Signs of Antichrist: IMF Blueprint for Global Currency

Authored by Reza Moghadam, director of the IMF’s strategy, policy and review department, it discusses how the IMF sees the International Monetary System evolving after the financial crisis.Which means, in the eyes of the IMF at least, the best way to ensure the stability of the international monetary system (post crisis) is actually by launching a global currency. And that, the IMF says, is largely because sovereigns — as they stand — cannot be trusted to redistribute surplus reserves, or battle their deficits, themselves.
The ongoing buildup of such imbalances, meanwhile, only makes the system increasingly vulnerable to shocks. It’s also a process that’s ultimately unsustainable for all, says the IMF. Or as they put it: The global crisis of 2008/09, for all its costs, has not jeopardized international monetary stability, and the IMS is not on the verge of collapse. That said, the current system has serious imperfections that feed and facilitate policies—of reserves accumulation and reserves creation—that are ultimately unsustainable and, until they are reversed, expose the system to risks and shocks that a reformed system could minimize.

U.S. Government Approves First Use of Stem Cells

U.S. Government Approves First Use of Stem Cells

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the world’s first human clinical trial of a therapy involving embryonic stem cells, the biotechnology company behind the planned trial announced Friday. California-based Geron Corporation has been given the green light to proceed with its trial on a therapy for patients with spinal-cord injury. The trial involves injecting a stem-cell treatment into patients with severe spinal cord injury with the hope that it would help damaged nerve cells regrow and eventually allow patients to regain movement. Both opponents and proponents of embryonic stem cell research highlight the fact that the FDA had originally approved the study in January 2009 and the trial was scheduled to begin last summer. But Geron found that animals used in a preclinical study had developed small cysts that appeared with “a higher frequency” than other studies, resulting in the FDA delaying the trial from proceeding.

Oil Hits a New 3 Month High on Economic Optimism

Oil rose to its highest level in nearly three months on Monday, topping $81 a barrel as a sharp rise on equity markets and a weak dollar raised optimism about the strength of the global economic recovery and the outlook for energy demand. U.S. September crude rose $2.64, more than 3 percent, to $81.59 a barrel by 11:39 EDT, the highest price since May 5. ICE Brent rose $2.78 to $80.96, the highest level since May 13. U.S. stocks rallied as strong earnings results and better-than-expected manufacturing data prompted investors to build on last month’s run-up. European stock markets set the tone early, hitting a three-month high following strong results from leading banks HSBC (HSBA.L) and BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA). The U.S. dollar fell to a three-month low against a basket of currencies .DXY as investors moved to riskier assets, which supported oil prices. A weaker greenback makes commodities cheaper for holders of other currencies.

Pastor Seeks 100,000 To ‘Save America’

Pastor Seeks 100,000 To ‘Save America’

Dr. Michael Youssef, founding pastor of The Church of The Apostles and president of the ministry Leading the Way in Atlanta, has found 42,450 people so far to join him in daily prayer for the United States since the “God Save America” campaign launched on July 4. “The greatest battle of our time is the battle for the biblical truth,” stated Youssef in an e-mail to The Christian Post on Monday. “Universalism is rampant in evangelical churches and nothing short of a Holy Spirit revival sweeping across the land will save Christ’s Church from total apostasy.” Youssef believes that the daily prayers of the 100,000 Christians who participate in the campaign will save the “Church and thus the country.” A major emphasis of the prayer campaign is to remind American Christians that the United States was founded on dependence upon God. But today, Youssef says, the country’s leaders and citizens try to attain success in their own terms. The “God Save America” prayer campaign was inspired by a New York businessman named Jeremiah Lanphier from the 19th century who led a series of small prayer meetings in New York City. The gatherings of less than 20 people soon grew to thousands and expanded to other states, noted Youssef. Across the country, stores would close during lunch time so workers could attend local prayer meetings.

    Obama Administration Killing Freedom?

    Obama Administration Killing Freedom?

“End Times” authors Tim LaHaye and Craig Parshall say the Obama administration may be killing religious freedom by redefinition. In a statement posted on their website this past week, the co-authors of the political thrillerEdge of Apocalypse claim there is a shadow growing over religious freedom in America. “We are talking about the Obama Administration’s subtle, but apparently deliberate use of a language-sleight-of-hand, substituting the phrase ‘freedom of worship’ for ‘freedom of religion,’” they wrote this past Tuesday. According to the fiction series authors, President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have “consistently” used the new phrase in several speeches in recent months. They pointed to how the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom also noted the shift and raised a flag on it in its 2010 annual report.
