    7.0 Earthquake Hits New Guinea

    7.0 Earthquake Hits New Guinea

PORT MORESBY — A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck a remote mountainous region of the Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea on Thursday, seismologists said, causing panic but no initial damage or injuries. The quake hit a sparsely populated area of the island of New Britain at 8:01 am (2201 GMT Wednesday) at a depth of 54 kilometres, the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the Papua New Guinea Earthquake Office said. “We are not aware of any damage at this point, but it was pretty strongly felt in the town of Kimbe and on other parts of the island, people are really shaken up,” seismologist Lawrence Anton of the PNG Earthquake Office told AFP. The quake hit about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the centre of a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that hit the region in July. The epicentre of the latest quake was 145 kilometres east of Kandrian, on New Britain, and 570 kilometres east of Port Moresby, the capital of Papua New Guinea.

    6.7 Earthquake Rocks Alaska

    6.7 Earthquake Rocks Alaska

A series of strong aftershocks in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands region Sunday followed a powerful earthquake that shook the remote area, but officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or injury. There also was no threat of a tsunami from any of the quakes. The U.S. Geological Survey said the initial 6.7-magnitude temblor struck at 9:56 p.m. Saturday and was centered in the Bering Sea about 155 miles southwest of Dutch Harbor. The quake hit about 21 miles beneath the seabed. USGS geophysicist Rafael Abreu said there were at least 11 aftershocks, including one occurring at 11:48 a.m. Sunday that had a 5.8 preliminary magnitude. He said that magnitude was still under review and could change.

Inactive Fault May Trigger Giant California Quake

Inactive Fault May Trigger Giant California Quake

For a half-dozen years those who oversee the 57-year-old Isabella flood control dam above Bakersfield, as well as California Institute of Technology geologists, have been studying the fault closely. “It came as a surprise to see that a long-inactive fault can produce significant quakes,” said geologist Elisabeth Nadin of Caltech, who has hiked the sparsely populated rugged terrain and mapped where evidence showed the fault ruptured violently at least 3,300 years ago. Geologists working for the Army Corps of Engineers have also studied the fault’s potential for rupturing and are surveying the dam to determine whether it needs strengthening against future large quakes. The fault emerged some 86 million years ago when the immense granite mass of the Sierra was uplifting, said Nadin, who has found the evidence of past violence in the rocks around it.

Earthquake Moved California City 31 Inches

Earthquake Moved California City 31 Inches

The powerful earthquake that struck Baja California and the southwestern United States in April actually moved an entire California border city, NASA radar images show. Calexico, Calif., near the U.S.-Mexico border, moved as much as 2 1/2 feet (80 cm) south and down into the ground due to the magnitude-7.2 earthquake on April 4. Called the El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake, the temblor was centered 32 miles (52 km) south-southeast ofCalexico and was the strongest quake to strike the region in nearly 120 years. Two people were killed and hundreds more were injured.

    6.1 Quake Jolts Japan

    6.1 Quake Jolts Japan

A second large earthquake was reported today in Tokyo Japan. Similar to the 7.5 quake that shook the Indian Islands, it is rare for two large quakes to happen at the same time. Jesus said when we see an increase in the severity and frequency of earthquakes, that we know His return is near. Luke 21:11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. Many hundreds of small quakes happen everyday around the world, but there is a marked increase in the number of severe quakes over 6 magnatude that have increased by more than 500 percent in the past 10 years. Watching for these types of events and realizing that the increase of natural dissasters readies us for Jesus return and causes our hearts to be reminded we are not long for this earth.

    7.5 Earthquake Shakes Indian Islands

    7.5 Earthquake Shakes Indian Islands

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck under the Indian Ocean near India’s Nicobar and Andaman Islands early Sunday, triggering panic on the archipelago and an initial regional tsunami alert. The quake shook people from their sleep and briefly disrupted power supplies, causing alarm on a string of islands which were hit by the massive 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, but there were no reports of casualties or damage. Tremors were also felt on mainland India, more than 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) from the epicentre near India’s most easterly territories.
“It was very difficult to leave our home because the electricity went off and the entire Port Blair plunged into darkness during the earthquake,” tour operator M. Vinod said from the capital of the Andamans. The quake struck at 1:26 am (1926 GMT Saturday) at a depth of 35 kilometres (22 miles), with the epicentre around 160 kilometres west of the Nicobar Islands.

    Deadly Earthquake Hits Afghanistan

    Deadly Earthquake Hits Afghanistan

A powerful earthquake has struck central Afghanistan, killing at least seven people and wounding more than 30, officials said.
The quake of 5.3 magnitude hit the highly mountainous Samangan province, northwest of the capital, Kabul, early on Monday.
The earthquake was felt in Kabul as well as neighbouring countries of Uzbekistan and Tajikstan.
Ghulam Sakhi Baghlani, a local administrator of Samangan, said three districts in the region were affected most.
“Seven people were killed and 34 have been wounded. Forty houses have collapsed,” Baghlani said.
He also said more than 300 homes had been damaged.

Is there an Increase in the Frequency of Earthquakes?

Is there an Increase in the Frequency of Earthquakes?

Luke 21:11 And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.
Jesus made it a point to tell us that when we see a marked increase in the frequency and intensity of global earthquakes that we should be expecting His return in the near future.
The statistical data on earthquakes reveals that they have increased in frequency and intensity by 500 percent in the last 50 years. If the current trend stays in the place of frequent large earthquakes, it may be a sure sign of Jesus soon return for His church.

Massive Earthquakes No Big Deal for the Earth

Massive Earthquakes No Big Deal for the Earth

Yesterday’s magnitude-7.2 earthquake that rocked northern Mexico and parts of Southern California was barely worth noting compared to the ongoing, major forces that shape planet Earth. In a geologic sense, there are greater forces at work, from the coming and going of ice ages to an ongoing imbalance in the planet’s rotation that make it wobble like a spinning top that’s winding down.
Even the monstrous 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile in February, and which might have changed Earth’s rotation and shortened days by a fraction, hardly had an impact on the planet in the long run. In fact, scientists have a hard time spotting the effect of even bigger quakes on something such as the Earth’s rotation, said Richard Gross, a geophysicist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.
“These large earthquakes are rare, catastrophic events,” Gross explained. “What’s normally causing the Earth’s rotation to change is the surface mass movement of the oceans and atmosphere.

Magnitude-5.6 Quake Strikes Near Guantanamo, Cuba

Magnitude-5.6 Quake Strikes Near Guantanamo, Cuba

HAVANA (Reuters) – A 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Guantanamo city in eastern Cuba on Saturday, sending residents fleeing into the streets but a local government official said there were no casualties.
A spokesman at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay reported no damage there.
“It’s all calm. There’s no damage and no victims either,” said a local government official in Guantanamo city, who asked not to be named.
State-run Radio Reloj reported from Guantanamo that the quake caused cracks in some buildings and some pieces of masonry fell.
The quake, which also was felt strongly in Cuba’s second city of Santiago de Cuba, was centered 27 miles southwest of Guantanamo at a depth of 14 miles, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

    13 Crazy Earthquake Facts

    13 Crazy Earthquake Facts

    1. Earth has been more seismologically active in the past 15 years or so, says Stephen S. Gao, a geophysicist at Missouri University of Science & Technology. Not all seismologist agree, however.

    2. San Francisco is moving toward Los Angeles at the rate of about 2 inches per year — the same pace as the growth of your fingernails — as the two sides of the San Andreas fault slip past one another. The cities will meet in several million years. However, this north-south movement also means that despite fears, California won’t fall into the sea.

    3. March is not earthquake month, despite what some people believe. True, on March 28, 1964, Prince William Sound, Alaska, experienced a 9.2 magnitude event — one of the biggest ever. It killed 125 people and caused $311 million in property damages. And on March 9, 1957, the Andreanof Islands, Alaska, felt a 9.1 temblor. But the next three biggest U.S. earthquakes occurred in February, November, and December. The devastating major earthquake in Chile of 2010 struck on Feb. 27. And the huge 9.3 temblor that spawned the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 occurred on Dec. 26.

Why the Earthquake in Chili Generated a Smaller Tsunami

Why the Earthquake in Chili Generated a Smaller Tsunami

It is fortunate that one of the biggest earthquakes in recent history has generated only relatively small tsunamis that crossed the Pacific Ocean from Chile to Japan.
This is almost certainly because the rupture that generated the earthquake occurred quite deep in the Earth’s crust. The size of a tsunami, which means “harbour wave” in Japanese, is directly related to the volume of water that is displaced during the movement of the seabed during an earthquake. The bigger the amount of water that is moved up or down, the bigger the tsunami that is likely to be created.

Chile Earthquake: Shock Effect on Earth’s Axis

Chile Earthquake: Shock Effect on Earth’s Axis

The earthquake that struck Chile on Saturday may have shifted the Earth’s axis and created shorter days, according to scientists at Nasa. Richard Gross, a geophysicist at Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said the 8.8 magnitude quake could have moved the Earth’s axis by 2.7 milliarcseconds (about 8cm) – enough to shorten a day by about 1.26 microseconds.
A large quake can shift huge amounts of rock and alter the distribution of mass on the planet. When that distribution changes, it changes the rate at which the planet rotates, which determines the length of a day.
“The length of the day should have got shorter by 1.26 microseconds,” Gross told the Bloomberg news agency. “The axis about which the Earth’s mass is balanced should have moved by 2.7 milliarcseconds.”

Magnitude 9.0 Earthquake in Northwest’s Future?

Magnitude 9.0 Earthquake in Northwest’s Future?

Just 50 miles off the Pacific Northwest coast is an earthquake hot spot that threatens to unleash on Seattle, Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, British Columbia, the kind of damage that has shattered Chile.
The fault has been dormant for more than 300 years, but when it awakens – today or decades from now – the consequences could be devastating.
Recent computer simulations of a hypothetical magnitude-9 quake found that shaking could last two to five minutes – strong enough to potentially cause poorly constructed buildings from British Columbia to Northern California to collapse and severely damage highways and bridges.
Such a quake also would send powerful tsunami waves rushing to shore in minutes. While big cities such as Portland and Seattle would be protected from severe flooding, low-lying seaside communities may not be as lucky.

Haiti, Chile, now Taiwan: Earthquake Escalation?

Haiti, Chile, now Taiwan: Earthquake Escalation?

The 6.4-magnitude Taiwan earthquake that hit Thursday on the heels of massive quakes in Haiti and Chile, has some worrying about a spike in seismic activity.
But there’s no geological connection between those quakes, and nothing unusual in the number of recent big quakes, says Kuo Kai-wen, director of the Seismology Center of Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau.
“Because Haiti just happened, everyone’s paying more attention to earthquakes,” says Mr. Kuo. “But the activity is normal – it’s not so scary.”

Haiti Quake Reminds Israel to be Prepared for the Worst

Haiti Quake Reminds Israel to be Prepared for the Worst

On Tuesday, the tropical country of Haiti experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale. Statistically speaking, Israel is likely to experience an earthquake of similar magnitude, sometime in the next 50 years. “We know for certain that it will happen in Israel and we know that as time goes on, the chances of it taking place in our lifetimes is greater,” said Dr. Avi Shapira, the head of the government steering committee for earthquake preparedness.
The last major earthquake to occur in the region was a 6.2 magnitude quake, which took place 100 kilometers south of Eilat in 1995. The last fatal earthquake took place in 1927 and was also measured at 6.2 in the Richter scale. Nearly 500 people were killed.
Israel’s eastern border runs along one of the world’s seismic hotspots, the Syrian-African rift fault line. With the average time-span between earthquakes on the same scale in the regions standing at 80 years, geology experts agree that Israel is long overdue for the next major earthquake and that it can happen at any time. Even with the best available equipment notice will be short.
