Pelosi Wants to be a Speaker of ‘The Word’

Pelosi Wants to be a Speaker of ‘The Word’

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) surprised many when she told the Catholic Community Conference that she feels compelled to “give voice” through public policy to “the Word made Flesh,” CNS News reported Tuesday. “My favorite word is the Word,” Pelosi, a lifelong Catholic, said to the May 6 conference on Capitol Hill. “And that is everything. It says it all for us. And you know the Gospel reference of the Word. And that Word is, we have to give voice to what that means in terms of public policy that would be in keeping with the values of the Word.” “Fill it in with anything you want,” she said. “But, of course, we know it means: ‘The Word was made flesh and dwelt amongst us.’ And that’s the great mystery of our faith. … So, we have to make sure we’re prepared to answer in this life, or otherwise, as to how we have measured up.”

Scott Brown: He’s No Ted Kennedy

Scott Brown: He’s No Ted Kennedy

Political advocacy groups stayed up late Tuesday night to see that the unbelievable had actually occurred—a Republican had filled the Senate vacancy left by the death of Senator Edward Kennedy.
The replacement was painfully ironic for Democrats. Kennedy was a long-time advocate for universal health care, and the election of Scott Brown gives Republicans the one additional vote needed to block Democrat health care legislation.
As the dust settled, Christian advocacy groups interpreted the results.
“This election had nothing to do with Scott Brown or Martha Coakley,” said Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council (FRC). “It was about our President, who stepped into the Oval Office 365 days ago and made a hard-Left turn so fast that it gave Americans whiplash.”

    Spain Takes Over EU Presidency

MADRID – Spain took over the presidency of the European Union on Friday, with the prime minister promising to work to end the continent’seconomic crisis.
The six-month rotating post passed from Sweden to Spain at the stroke of midnight, and the country launched its stint in the helm with a spectacular sound and light show for New Year’s Eve revelers gathered at the Puerta del Sol, one of Madrid’s most emblematic plazas.
Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said Spain’s main goal as EU president is “to fight for economic recovery, for recovery from the crisis, and make Europe an economy that is more and more productive, more and more innovative and more and more sustainable

The Effect Christians Have on Politics

The Effect Christians Have on Politics

For political analysts, the lesson in Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman’s loss this month in a special congressional election in New York is obvious: The right overreached. After pressuring Republican nominee Dede Scozzafava out of the race with charges that she was too liberal, conservative activists watched New York’s 23rd District go to a Democrat for the first time in more than a century. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who had endorsed Scozzafava and warned Republicans not to “purge the party of anybody who doesn’t agree with us 100 percent,” appeared to be vindicated.

Senate Prepares For Debate on Health Care Bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — After months of maneuvering, the Senate stands at the brink of a historic battle over health care with President Barack Obama and his allies on one side and Republicans, outnumbered but unflinching, on the other.

“Now it’s America’s turn, and this will not be a short debate,” Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, warned after Majority Leader Harry Reid unveiled long-awaited legislation Wednesday night to extend coverage to 30 million more Americans and force insurance companies to take all comers.

    House Passes Health-Care Bill, 220-215

Washington Post House Democrats passed historic legislation late Saturday to expand the nation’s health-care system, securing 220 votes — two more than needed — with the support of one Republican lawmaker. During a roll call vote, applause broke out in the House as the tally hit 218 — a target Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other party [...]

    Democrats, Incumbents Get Wake-Up Call

    Democrats, Incumbents Get Wake-Up Call

RICHMOND, Va. — Eager to drain the 2009 elections of drama and import, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs claimed Tuesday night that President Barack Obama was “not watching returns.”

You can be sure that he is studying them closely now: The off-year elections were, in two big races, an unmistakable rebuke of Democrats, reshuffling Obama’s political circumstances in ways likely to have severe near-term consequences for his policy agenda and larger governing strategy.
