Whatever Happened to the New Age Movement? Part 2

Whatever Happened to the New Age Movement? Part 2

As discussed in Part 1 of this series, the New (Age) Spirituality which is “paganism (the occult) in modern dress” continued to grow through the 1990s and has become even more prominent during the first decade of the 21st century. It currently can be found in the work place, hospitals, public schools, prisons, on television, in bookstores, and as we will be discussing, it has been welcomed by the Church with open arms! In 2 Corinthians 2:11, Paul took it for granted that the people of Corinth were not ignorant of Satan’s devices. Sadly, that can’t be said of many believers today. The discernment skills of many believers are either very weak or nonexistent. The combination of a profound Biblical illiteracy and lack of a literal hermeneutic; i.e., “God says what He means and means what He says,” has left the church wide open for New (Age) Spirituality deception.
Spiritual Discernment and the Mature Believer
Both Hebrews 5:14 and Ephesians 4:14 describe the discernment skills characteristic of a mature believer. Specifically, Hebrews 5:14 describes a mature believer as one who through practice has exercised vigorously their faculty of the mind for perceiving, understanding, and judging to discern both good and evil—truth and lie.Although there is a specific gift of the Spirit given to some, called “discerning of spirits,” as spoken of in 1 Corinthians 12:10, the discernment skills referenced by both Hebrews 5:14 and Ephesians 4:13, 14, are characteristic of ALL mature believers.

Whatever Happened to the New Age Movement? Part 1

Whatever Happened to the New Age Movement? Part 1

During the 1980s, Bible-believing pastors, teachers, and watchmen for “The Faith” stood up and began to prevail against the New Age Movement. By the mid 1990s, it appeared as if the church assumed the threat had passed. It was as if a veil of deception enveloped the church to hide the truth—not only had the New Age Movement not faded away, it was spreading exponentially into the very fabric of society. Ray Yungen, author of A Time of Departing, describes this cleverly renamed New (Age) Spirituality as “The Invisible De-nomination.”1 It has been hiding in plain sight for two decades. It is time for the church to remove the veil of deception and see this New (Age) Spirituality, which has permeated evangelical denominations, Bible schools, seminaries, Christian publishers and also the teachings of respected Bible teachers.
    Paganism in Modern Dress
Walter Martin evaluated these practices in his 1989 book, The New Age Cult, in which he states, “The New Age Cult is a revival of this ancient occultism. It holds historical ties to Sumerian, Indian, Egyptian, Chaldean, Babylonian, and Persian religious practices.” 2 The following occult practices (among others) are described in Deuteronomy 18:10-11:

Why The Virgin Birth of Jesus is Important

Why The Virgin Birth of Jesus is Important

The very first prophecy in the Bible is found in Genesis 3:15 where the Lord promises that it would be “The seed of a woman” would bring salvation to all men. Interesting because the woman does not have the “seed”, that product comes from the male. In the Lord saying that the woman would have the seed, He was affirming that the woman would have the ability to bring the Savior into the world without the benefit of a human father. The conception of the child would be by supernatural means, that of the Holy Spirit.
This is an extremely important statement by the Lord in that He is affirming to all men that they cannot save themselves by any good work or behavior change. Our forgiveness for sin and salvation can only come by a supernatural work of the Lord.

    What is Love?

    What is Love?

In this world, the term “Love” is used for many different expressions. A person might say that they “Love Chocolate”, a few minutes later they may proclaim “I Love You”. We use the same word; Love, to describe anything that we are very fond of or enjoy. Therein is the human definition of Love. It seems that whatever affects us in a possitive way, or brings pleasure or enjoyment to us is a cause to proclaim our Love. The Biblical definition of Love is much different. In fact, during the writing of the New Testament, the Greek language did not even have a word for the Biblical term for Love. From God’s perspective Love is not what moves us or makes us feel good, it is what is demonstrated when a person gives of their self to bless of benefit another person. The Greek Language calls this kind of self sacrificail Love “Agapao”, or “Agape”.

Internet Evangelist Challenges Terrorist to Debate

ST PETERSBURG, Fla., June 1 /Christian Newswire/ — Bill Keller who is seen daily on Comcast’s MyTV8 has blanketed the internet with a video message that speaks directly to terror Imam Anwar Al-Awlaki and all of Islam. The message has been submitted to over 50 U.S. video hosting sites, 100 international sites and 30 Islamic sites in a saturation plan to reach Al-Awlaki. Keller says “Al-Awlaki, since you seem to be a fan of video messages, I thought this would be the best way to communicate with you” Following the taunting message Al-Awlaki recently released that was seen by millions of Americans, Bill Keller’s message is as timely as it is controversial.

    What Do Jehovah’s Witnesses Believe?

    What Do Jehovah’s Witnesses Believe?

According to Jehovah’s Witness’ theology, God is a single person, not aTrinity, who does not know all things and is not everywhere. He first created Michael the Archangel through whom He created all “other things,” including the universe, the earth, Adam and Eve, etc. This creative work took God 42,000 years. At one point, The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society taught that God ruled the universe from somewhere in the Pleiades star system. They have since modified this to say that the “Pleiades can no longer be considered the center of the universe and it would be unwise for us to try to fix God’s throne as being at a particular spot in the universe.”1 Such changes and evencontradictions in teaching are frequent in the Watchtower organization and when a doctrine changes, they tell their followers that the light of truth is getting brighter

Do Mormons Believe in a Different Jesus?

Do Mormons Believe in a Different Jesus?

“In bearing testimony of Jesus Christ, President Hinckley spoke of those outside the Church who say Latter-day Saints ‘do not believe in the traditional Christ.’ ‘No, I don’t. The traditional Christ of whom they speak is not the Christ of whom I speak. For the Christ of whom I speak has been revealed in this the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times. He together with His Father, appeared to the boy Joseph Smith in the year 1820, and when Joseph left the grove that day, he knew more of the nature of God than all the learned ministers of the gospel of the ages.’” (LDS Church News Week ending June 20, 1998, p. 7).
Christians have long maintained that Mormonism teaches a Jesus that is different from what the Bible reveals. Of course, the Mormons say that they believe in the same Jesus that originally walked on the earth and is revealed in the Bible. Though they may make this claim, it is up to them to prove it. Especially in light of what Mormonism says about God and Jesus.

Grace Too Amazing To Be True?

Grace Too Amazing To Be True?

I suppose it was during those rare moments trapped in a car for hours on end, seeing a different city every few hundred miles, viewing the countless lives passing by, that I began to consider the amazing grace that the Lord of Heaven has for human beings. We have this perplexing problem as dwellers of this earth that universally we seem to think that we are worthy of heaven by virtue of our good works outweighing our bad.

I have been asked numerous times by friends and those who have attended my lectures, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” The answer to that question is simply that there really are no good people. Now before you cancel your subscription to my Kindle Blog, write me a letter or worse stop reading the rest of this article, hear me out.

Atheists Lecture Believers on Faith in God

Atheists Lecture Believers on Faith in God

I love watching atheists try to tell religious people what they should believe about God. I’m not talking about atheists trying to convince religious people not to believe in God. We expect that. I’m talking about atheists telling religious people how to continue properly believing in God. I find this incredibly amusing, because, you know, atheists are experts in things like keeping faith. Michael Ruse is a prime specimen.

An atheist (he says “I find it a great relief no longer to believe in God”) and self-declared “ex-Christian,” a few years back Ruse wrote a book titled Can a Darwinian be a Christian? and answered “Absolutely!” (p. 217) Now, in a recent piece in the UK Guardian, Ruse lectures none other than the Archbishop of Canterbury on proper belief in God:

Getting What You Want From God

Getting What You Want From God

We’re going to take a look at the life and folly of a man named Balaam. He was a prophet of God who misused his gifts and his relationship with God for personal gain. Hopefully we can learn the invaluable lesson that Balaam learned the hard way.

The curtain opens in Numbers 22. The children of Israel are wandering through the desert, and have just beaten up, killed, and plundered the Amorites. Balak, the king of Moab, has just seen all of this, and he begins considering what might happen to them! Worried that his people might be next in line for defeat, Balak tries to get some “insurance” by getting God’s prophet, Balaam, on their side. “So he sent messengers to Balaam saying, `Behold a people came out of Egypt, and they are living opposite me. Please come and curse this people for me; perhaps l may be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For l know that he whom you bless is blessed and he whom you curse is cursed.’

Evidence of Jesus Found in the Dead Sea Scrolls

Evidence of Jesus Found in the Dead Sea Scrolls

If someone had asked a minister in 1947 to prove that the original Hebrew Scriptures from the Old Testament were reliably copied without error throughout the last two thousand years, he might have had some difficulty in providing an answer. The oldest Old Testament manuscript used by the King James translators was dated approximately A.D. 1100. Obviously, that old manuscript from A.D. 1100 was a copy of a copy of a copy, etc. for over two thousand years. How could we be sure that the text in the A.D. 1100 copy of the Scriptures was identical with the original text as given to the writers by God and inspired by Him? However, an extraordinary discovery occurred in the turbulent year before Israel became a nation. A Bedouin Arab found a cave in Qumran near the Dead Sea which ultimately yielded over a thousand priceless manuscripts dating back before A.D. 68, when the Roman legions destroyed the Qumran village during the Jewish war against Rome.

    Are Jehovah’s Witnesses Christians?

    Are Jehovah’s Witnesses Christians?

The answer to the question is, “No. It is not Christian.” Like all non-Christian cults, the Jehovah’s Witness organization distorts the essential doctrines of Christianity. It denies the deity of Christ, His physical resurrection, and salvation by grace. This alone makes it non-Christian. To support its erring doctrines, the Watchtower organization (which is the author and teacher of all official Jehovah’s Witness theology), has even altered the Bible to make it agree with its changing and non-Christian teachings.

    What Is Gnosticism?

    What Is Gnosticism?

Gnosticism traces its roots back just after the beginning of the Christian Church. Some researchers state that evidence of its existence even predates Christianity. Whichever the case, the error of gnosticism had affected the culture and church of the time and possibly even a earned a mention in 1 John 4.

The word “gnosticism” comes from the Greek word “gnosis” which means “knowledge.” There were many groups that were Gnostic and it isn’t possible to easily describe the nuances of each variant of Gnostic doctrines. However, generally speaking, Gnosticism taught that salvation is achieved through special knowledge (gnosis). This knowledge usually dealt with the individual’s relationship to the transcendent Being.

    Is Mormonism Christian?

    Is Mormonism Christian?

Is Mormonism Christian?” is a very important question. The answer is equally important and simple. No. Mormonism is not Christian.
If you are a Mormon, please realize that CARM is not trying to attack you, your character, or the sincerity of your belief. If you are a non-Mormon looking into Mormonism, or if you are a Christian who is simply researching Mormonism, then this paper should be of help to you.
The reason Mormonism is not Christian is because it denies one or more of the essential doctrines of Christianity. Of the essential doctrines (that there is only one God, Jesus is God in flesh, forgiveness of sins is by grace alone, and Jesus rose from the dead physically, the gospel being the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus), Mormonism denies three of them: how many gods there are, the person of Jesus, and His work of salvation.

The Relationship Between Religion and Science

The Relationship Between Religion and Science

Science and religion have often been viewed as adversaries. A number of famous battles between scientists and religious authorities have helped to fuel this perception. For instance, Italian scientist Galileo Galilei, who 400 years ago began the first systematic astronomical observations using a telescope, was tried and convicted of heresy by the Catholic Church for his defense of the Copernican model that put the sun, rather than the Earth, at the center of the universe. Roughly 250 years later, British naturalist Charles Darwin was criticized by Anglican Church authorities who rejected his theory that life evolved through natural selection, particularly when the theory was explicitly applied to human beings.

Is Jesus Really God, or Just a Good Teacher?

Is Jesus Really God, or Just a Good Teacher?

Following Jesus is about relationship, not religion. Believing in Jesus and the sacrifice He made for us, is unlike any religion of man. Jesus Himself, is not like any man that has ever lived.

First, even though Jesus is fully man, the Bible also describes Him as fully God. One of the mysteries of the Universe is how the infinite God of the Universe could contain Himself within the body of a human being.

It was impossible that Jesus could offer His life in exchange for all of our lives, unless He became one of us, a man redeeming mankind.

    New Age and the Church

    New Age and the Church

New Age teachings, while offering some well-defined positions, are often offered in various terms, depending on what the hearers will tolerate. This has made it possible for New Age proponents to offer their admittedly religious teachings in public education, and distinctly non-Christian religious teachings in Christian churches. New Age ideas are easy to spot, even in a church: the concept of a one-world humanity, which, it may or may not be stated, is really the next step in our ongoing evolution; the idea of self-improvement through “getting in touch with yourself”; or self realization; the idea that mankind is now struggling to reach a more spiritual level of existence; self-actualization; self-worth; meditation; values clarification; the idea that reality is not just “there,”; reality is what you make it – and non-reality is what you make it; and focusing. In a church the use of Bible studies which focus on the participants’ thoughts, feelings or opinions rather than on what God is saying as well as reliance on secular (evolutionary world view) counseling rather than Scriptural Law /Gospel counseling usually become means by which New Age thought gains influence in a church.

An Honest Question From A New Believer

An Honest Question From A New Believer

There is not really a clear explanation in the scripture for your question, but here is my attempt at answering.
God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit and these three are expressed as “Masculine”.

It seems that God has all of the attributes that we see expressed in both a Male and Female, however, He is still Masculine.

When it says that we were created in His image, I believe that in order to properly illustrate as many of the characteristics of the Godhead as possible, He chose to express these qualities in two separate beings, Male and Female.
